Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the reply. Sure, not upgrading is the safest option, in this tight time-frame case. I have heard that the v4 EM-1 is the best for C-af, and locks onto initial focus faster than anything before. This is critically important for whale work.
Before buying my third body for backup on these trips, I went with a visiting friend who is a Canon expert and rented a brand new 70D body and a nearly new 75-200 and 100-400, both IS and L, and we went shooting for a weekend. While that combo seemed to catch initial focus faster that my E-M1 and 75-300 Mk 2, upon review of the images, there were no more keepers from the Canon system with either lens. Following week, I returned to the rental shop, showed my results, and tried different individual copies of the body and lenses, and found almost no difference between these and the ones I rented, and that's what led me to stay with what I know. I have gotten some very fine whale breach shots with my OMD kit, so I'll just stick with what I have.
I am looking forward to faster initial focus grab and the sync of OIS and IBIS on my Panny lenses, but I will likely either only upgrade one body or none until I return.
