I have a SONY alpha 390 dslr and

looking for a 500mm or more has to be A-mount. i am on a small budget will stretch a bit for good lens .
Without a doubt, the king of budget 500mm is the Sony/Minolta 500mm f8 AF reflex. The only AF mirror lens ever made. I see some on eBay for around $400-$500 (sample images, , note the unique "donut bokeh" characteristic of all mirror lenses).

After that consider (in no particular order):
  • Tamron 200-500mm
  • Sigma 150-500mm
  • Sigma 50-500mm (Bigma)
  • Sigma 150-600mm (Contemporary)
  • Tamron 150-600mm
Then for Lotto winners: Sony 500mm f4 or Sigma 200-500 f2.8

As other have stated, if your budget is tight, get the Sony/Minolta AF 500mm F8 Reflex. It has its limits (mainly the bokeh can be hideous), but it is not heavy , compact, has AF and is stabilized on an A-mount body.

Yes, you can crop from a shorter lens en have a similar result. IIRC Kurt Munger compared the 500 F8 Reflex to the 70-400 F4-5.6 SSM lens and showed that a crop from the latter is superior to the 500 F8 Reflex, but you pay a lot more money.

Being so compact and light, I actually put the 500 Reflex in my camera bag a lot, just in case I should need it. An average lens on your camera makes better pictures than a super-duper lens you left at home because it was too cumbersome to take it with you. It works good on my A55 and even better on my A77-II.

It takes time and practice to get the most out of the 500 Reflex, but it can give you great photos. Some examples:

If you decide to get the 500 Reflex, be sure that the filters (a clear filter and a NDx4 filter) that go with it are included.

Like the others I will say the 500mm reflex is your best bet. Contrast can be improved a bit with an extension tube on the end but it's easy to shoot with if you're carefull.

I recenly picked up a vivitar series 1, 100-500 f5.6. It's maybe a little better than the reflex and mine was 49 bucks I see a few on ebay. These came in A mount if you can find one but it's all manual and no AF. I made a post about it a week or so ago.

You're asking about buying an item and I think you ought to open a new thread and post there, but do give detailed information such as how you can pay, where you're happy to buy from geographically, budget and condition in the DPR classifieds Wanted thread here.

Are you a member of Dyxum? If not, why not join (it's free) as it's the Sony/Minolta A & E-Mount bible website.

Hope that helps. If you need the classified ads section in future, then click the Forums tab on the top toolbar and it'll open all the forums. In the right column about 75% down, you'll see the For Sale & Wanted thread title.

I don't know how small your budget but any new lens in the 500mm range won't be "cheap".

Here's a used Tamron 200-500.

If you can spend $1000 this lens is better.

I have the Tamron 200-500mm and I like it a lot. They can be found on Ebay pretty cheap these days.

Of course, as is the case with many lenses in this category, there are good copies and not so good copies. I'm satisfied with mine.
