Last time, really....getting ready to buy a Compact Flash card for my C5050. The number that preceeds the X is the write speed? So if I buy a 128M, I want the highest number...ie 12x or more? Thanks for the help.

the higher the number before the x, the faster the card is, although i don't know if it is specifically referring to read or write speed. so yes, when buying one, a higher number is preferable as it should be faster.

The Olympus C-5050Z allows pretty fast access to CompactFlash cards, so it is worthwhile getting a faster card.

For example, you can write twice as fast to a Ridata 40X as to a Dane-elec 16X. But this only really matters if you use RAW or TIFF.

xD is pretty slow (about the same speed as Dane-Elec 16X) and expensive. So only get that if you have a really good reason (eg panorama, but then you do need the Olympus card).

So, no panarama with CF, which is ok, and any particular brand? Lexar, Scandisk, etc. Any great online stores?

Deb,

They've got some good prices on their blow-out page. Not the fastest memory cards, but 64MB smartmedia for free after rebate, and 128MB Compact Flash cards for $15 after rebate.

I picked up a 256MB Trancend for about $50 that is working great.

Have a look at mydigitaldiscount.com.

I bought a Ridata 1Gb 40X from them. Service was good but they sometimes take a day or two to respond to e-mails.

I would recommend the Ridata but I think that the 40X is only available in the 1Gb for the moment. The other sizes are still 20X. But the faster 256Mb and 512Mb Ridata should be imminent.

I personally can't recommend Transcend 30X because I have had trouble with those and my 5050. Sandisk is too slow and Lexar too expensive.

Does anyone know what the speed rating of the Kingston 256MB memory cards is? They have them for $39.99 at http://shop.kingston.com through July 31 ($54.99 - $15 mail-in rebate). This is a pretty good price compared to other prices I've seen locally and online.
