I use the rx100 iv for slog2 footage. thanks for your time and input.

Here are two 4K test videos I made shooting Slog 2 in the RX100 iv and applying Alistair Chapman's LUT. The first, in bright light, shows the ungraded footage then the graded footage using the LUT. I, of course, used Sony Vegas Pro 13 and the Vision Color plug in:

The second is in dim light, again showing the ungraded footage first:

Make sure to choose at least 1080 to view (best is 4K). If you are a Vimeo member you can download the original videos.

Are these "great" - I dunno. But if not it is not because of the LUT or the limitations of Vegas. My grading objective was to make the video resemble what I saw. It was not to achieve a "look."

in case you didn't know, davinci resolve is a free color grader

still need sony vegas 13 to do a lot of NLE work (davinci resolve can do some NLE, but not as well)

Very impressive results with the color grading. If anything, very slightly less saturation might be used, but I assume one can adjust saturation to individual taste.

I don't use Vegas (I use PowerDirector) but these clips are good advertisements for Vegas with its color grading module. If PowerDirector has a module like this, I'm not aware of it.

man that lut looks fantastic, there is quite minimum grain but i think its because of that lut....wherecan i find it??'''

OK, I guess all this terminology must be video-specific because I don't have the foggiest idea what is being discussed. Vegas 13? Color grading? slog 2? LUT? Maybe there should be a separate forum for video so we still-photo people don't feel so ignorant. :-)

They are free to download.

One trick in using slog2 is to overexpose by one or two stops (making sure no 100% zebras) in order to maximize the signal to noise ratio. Alistair Chapman provides a separate LUT for each degree of overexposure you used (including none), so you don't have to reduce luminance yourself.

Can it work with 4K XAVC S or XAVC codecs (all Sony 4K)? Can it export 4K UHD?

free version can export to 1080p or lower (can still import 4K files). you'll need to pay $ to export to 4K

It was able to read and process 4K, but there was some issue with the sound when I last tried it

(if you read the link I had to my previous post), I don't see any need for me to mess with SLOG2 right now

I am not sure what link you are referring to. But, I also have chosen not to shoot with Slog2 generally. It turns out the other Picture Profiles that do not *require* color grading have pretty good latitude for just the normal tweaking. I am experimenting with combinations of gammas and color sets to find the best results ooc.

for me:

use cases:
  • scenarios with high dynamic range
  • (eg: capturing sunlight/sky along with people/shadows against a building. if you see highlight clipping on histogram, think about using slog2)
  • with 1600 ISO, noise is a concern. might want to overexpose by 1 stop (you lose some highlight detail, but less noise in your midtones/shadows. check your histogram)
  • If scenario doesn't have enough dynamic range, don't use slog2 (due to noise + post-processing concerns) - explore other picture profiles like cine2
I just don't see myself in scenarios often that need more dynamic range
