Let's change the game

Thanks for the reply.

I did go ahead and purchase the 10mm lens. At less than $150 delivered it was so much cheaper than I've seen it sell anywhere else at any time during the past 10 months.

All told I've spent $845 on the following:

NX300
10mm
16mm
30mm
20-50mm

The next question is whether I should invest anymore and pick up the 45mm? At $130ish, the price is very good. Want the 50-200mm, but the price isn't any better than I've seen elsewhere.

Just an update. I ordered the 16-50mm S lens from Samsungparts.com on the day this thread was posted. I could not resist the price as I really liked this lens when I rented it.

Last night I received a UPS tracking number, which is within the 3-5 days shipping time frame they state. Expected delivery is 1/13, next Wednesday. Apparently their warehouse is in California (which makes sense), and I am on the east coast.

J & J International did not charge my credit card until last night when it was shipped. They did not change the shipping cost of $8.95, which they state could happen if the cost is more than they estimate on the checkout page.

So, here's hoping my box of nuts, bolts, metal and glass arrives in the form of a beautiful S lens which was 1/2 price of retail! I'll let you know.

And I just ordered a 72mm lens hood for $6.99 from Amazon which will be waiting to meet and protect it's new partner when it arrives.

For me, the 45mm is one of the best prime lens along with the 30mm. I'd go for it.

The image quality for the 50-200 is so so to me. I'm thinking of getting the 50-150 S lens, even though it's not quite as long. If it's anything like the 16-50 S lens, the image quality has got to be so much better than the 50-200. Of course the price reflects that.

The 50-150 is a lot better than the 50-200 but not as good as the 16-50 2.0-2.8. The focus in good light is fast and accurate but when it gets low prepare to manual focus; unless you are doing video, the focus speed even in low light can almost be described as magical, it focuses nearly as well as my own eyes and seems to focus on the right spot. If they could do this in stills mode then it would be the most competitive focusing system on the market. This pic is shot wide open at 150mm indoors to give you an idea of the difference between the two lenses.

I would buy this lens all over again especially at this price.

It had better be considering the price difference. But the 50-200 isn't terrible by any measure. It's as good as anyone else's kit telephoto zoom. And it makes a great travel companion since it's much smaller and lighter than the 50-150.

This may not be the case for all people, as I have not had the same experience. So I just did a test in my semi-darkened room where I evaluate images on my graphics workstation. There is a black coffee thermos on the table about 2½ feet away, giving very low contrast in the low light. I put the 16-50 S on my NX1 set to 50mm and focused on the thermos. It wasn't instant in the very subdued light, but it was very fast. A slight wobble and then lock. I changed the lens to the 50-150 S set to 50mm without changing any settings on the camera. The focus again was not instant, but was just as fast as the 16-50 S. A slight wobble and then lock. Note that I used central single focus point in the test, which is what I use over 90% of the time (focus and recompose, even moving subjects) in my shooting workflow. No matter what the focusing system on a camera, this will always be the most accurate method of auto focus. And I have never once noticed any difference of focusing speed between the two lenses.

That's interesting. I've read a lot of positive reviews about the 30mm, but in practice I like what I get out of the 16mm more. The 16mm has become my always on lens.

I was considering selling the 30mm to offset the cost of the 45mm.

Hi i glad to here that I ordered mine the next day so I hoping it will also be shipped today or monday. I also ordered the hood but got it from the same place. if good 50-150 next I hope

Do you guys think I would have to order the tripod mount collar separately or it will come with the lens? I'm leaning more towards the former.

Quite pricey for what it is. It's on national back order it seems. Is it needed?

p.s. The reviews of this lens mention that it cannot be removed. If it can't be removed maybe it's included.

Please do keep us updated. I'm going through the whole thread and sometimes it seems to good to be true, but there seems to be enough people stating that, you do in fact get a brand new lens. I'm interested in getting the 50-150 myself so if all is well with your brand new 16-50, I'll probably pull the trigger.

Please let us know if all you have to purchase is the lens cap and cover, or do you actually have to buy the mount for the lens barrel. Thanks!

That's exactly what I though first :)

"Total" barrel comes with caps and fully assembled. Only hood (and pouch, of course) is missing.

Since there was no "big announce" at CES from Samsung, I will be the one who'll give you a surprise instead :D

So, there will be no new cameras for now. And no new lenses. And some of you decided to keep what you have 'till it breaks. And maybe buy some lens(es) you need for next 2-3-5 years. Well, this is your chance.

Samsung provides very strange service and repair policy. They actually don't "repair" lenses if, say, something is wrong with motor or aperture unit (as Canon or Nikon does). They just replace the whole lens. For example, I had 45mm 3D lens that had oil on it's aperture blades. But service manual for this lens has only two parts: lens and lens mount. That's it, you can't buy aperture unit. Thanks no engineers, it has simple constriction, so I managed to disassemble it and clean aperture very easy. But, I digress...

You can buy "spare parts" in Samsung service or any website or shop, that sells it. And there is very interesting "part" called "ASSY BARREL TOTAL". It means complete lens. With caps. No hood. It will come in grey carton box with a limited warranty for a few months. And the price... Get ready to be surpirsed.

Here is a short list of models and corresponding part numbers. I won't post links, where you can buy it - just Google it. You can find another part numbers there and find the lens you need. I also post prices that are in list for today.

10mm f/3.5 - AD97-23814A - $138.20

16mm f/2.4 - AD97-21701A - $161.70

30mm f/2 - AD97-18379A - $124.26

45mm f/1.8 2D - AD97-23093B - $183.82

60mm f/2 - AD97-21044A - $383.17

85mm f/1.4- AD97-21694A - $514.34

12-24mm f/4-5.6 - AD97-23085A - $184.47

16-50mm f/2-2.8 - AD97-23876A - $621.67

50-150mm f/2.8 - AD97-24501A - $757.74

And you can get spare batteries in the same way as well. For example, NX30 battery:

BP1410 - AD43-00225A

I can only imagine how much money did Samsung lose due to this dumb service policy. And it will be no surprise if this was one of the major factors that led to current NX state. You just can't repair lens buy replacing it. It's not a freaking vacuum cleaner or a fridge.

And I'm sorry if my post will lead to heavy price drop on used gear (at least here on DPreview). But the things are what they are. And since there will be no new cameras in near future, some will have a chance to enjoy new lenses for reasonabe prices.

It also is a mark to those who in doubt about selling their gear and jumping into another system. I'll be glad to see you in EOS M club :)
Has anyone ordered from a Euro zone shop? Am I the only one with an NX from the old continent?

It is the tripod COLLAR on the 50-150 S that can NOT be removed (but can be rotated out of the way). The tripod mount itself is a separate piece that CAN be removed. My tripod collar remains rotated so the lock knob faces up and out of the way of the lens resting on my left palm. The tripod mount stays in my case until needed.
