Panasonic/Leica 100-400 $1,799.99 on Amazon

I wonder at what focal length the aperture starts to drop off - has this been revealed yet? Flexibility of having a zoom aside, f4 at 300mm for the Oly with the option to use my 1.4 converter makes it more desirable for me.

Does anyone know what the aperture will be at 300mm?

Amazon link is currently dead BTW. And my search on Amazon yielded no result.

43rumors has a video clip and some MTF charts:

Two things are notable:

1. The results are better than the Nocticron @ f1.2 and the 12-35 and 35-100 @ f2.8 (using Panasonic's own charts).

2. The results are also better at 400mm than at 100mm.

If these hold up in the real world, I'd say it's a home run.

Looks very promising, based on the video.

Have been pondering this lens for possible video use, so shall wait for further examples in a wider variety of shooting conditions.

Seems likely to be a sensible price for my wallet too, although it would probably mean a complete re-think of my approach to video shooting {so shall remain on the fence for now, as this video setting is not remotely close to my usual video shooting scenario's}.

For those who were asking about the f/ at 400mm, the description is {100-400mm F/4.0-6.3} so assume 6.3 @ 400mm.

My biggest gripe with with my PL100-300 is the plasticky-sticky zoom, so am concerned the 100-400 is no better. I have been sorely tempted to slap one of my front TC from the FZ50 days on it, like the Oly TCON17 or Nikon TC17ED, but the weight of the latter just yanks the PL100-300 out by gravity. OTOH, I absolutely adore the silky internal zoom of the PL45-175, and that it is a power zoom as well. With a fixed extension the PL45-175 tolerates the front TCONs very nicely.

Nice video, doesn't look big at all, I'm in!

Poor man's oly ;-)
At this price, it's poor Oly! ;-) :-P

I have a Nikon 300mm that I rarely use because it's hard to use that length in the field and actually find the critter I'm trying to shoot. A zoom is way easier.

For normal and wide lenses, I'll take primes any day over a zoom.

Panasonic site says delivery expected in March:

Poor Oly indeed, at least based on what I've seen in the Youtube vid. More versatile zoom, Leica approved glass, dual IS, half the weight, $700 cheaper and still a metal body that dust and water resistant...only downside is not as bright at the long end. Poor Oly indeed.

once it gets down to (if ever) $1000...*sigh* just not in my budget. Still, looks like a stunner so far and if it is indeed a stunner, then well worth the price. Hopefully Panny would one day upgrade the consumer 100-300mm for us mere mortals but till that day I'll continue to drool over the new PL 100-400mm.

Since the rumor mill started a couple years back, I always thought the idea of a super zoom, beyond the standard 75-300 or 100-300s was completely out of my reach. I simply don't shoot with teles that much to need something beyond a 150mm, moreover justify with the better half such an expenditure. I still believe the Oly 300 f:4 is beyond my reach, and way too limiting for anything other than wildlife or sports. But now that I look at the 100-400, I've been thinking it might not be a bad idea. The 1.8K starting price point is steep, but I'm sure it will soar around 1.2-1.3K in a couple years, so is getting tempting for an upgrade for 2017 or something like that. Or maybe I can get one in the used market.

We'll just see when the initial reviews come out, and how it ages. So far, in paper, looks very nice. I presume at 300mm would be around f:5.6, so is just half a stop slower than the 300mm, not so bad at all.
