I shoot with my left eye on viewfinder but I think I probably should try to switch. When shooting with left eye and use AF/AE lock button as AF-ON, I always find my right thumb touching therefore blurring my eye glasses. So now I use DOF preview button as AF-ON. I think another advantage is that when holding the camera waiting for the right moment to take the shot, you can use your left eye to see what's going on outside the viewfinder without having to put the camera down.

What about you?

There is an advantage being right eyed indeed but that does make me switch as I am left eyed.

I don't believe that 'eyedness' is as strong an inclination as handedness. I always go to my right eye first, but can easily switch if needed. Most cameras seem to be set up for right eye use....maybe that's the only reason I favor my right eye!

I am strongly right-handed (my left hand is useful for carrying things, or holding them steady, but I have difficulty doing any fine motor skill activity with it).

I shoot right-eyed, but that's mainly because I am accustomed to it, and it's more convenient with the way cameras are built - right eye on the viewfinder avoids squashed nose :-)

A follow-up to the question - do you keep both eyes open, or shut the eye not on the viewfinder? I've seen people do both, but I honestly don't know which I do! I shall have to remember to check next time I use a camera :)

You don't need a vote. It's a known statistic.

If possible you should use your dominant eye in the VF and keep your other eye open. This will give you the best technique. I am left eye dominant, so that gives me a problem with my nose and some of the switches.

Of course something like this is down to personal preference and to be honest the picture doesn't change no matter which eye you use.

Right eye to viewfinder, left open to see what is happening ..

It helps that I prefer portrait format so my left eye has less camera in front of it to look about.

Right eye shooting does have advantages. If you can switch, then go for it. However ..

I'm not ambidextrous as such, but I've learnt how to easily switch computer mouse use to either hand with no issues. But for looking through a viewfinder, I simply can't seem to overcome my left eye dominance, so it seems I'm stuck. Looks like some people simply can't swap eyes easily.

Eye patch for prolonged period or corrective laser surgery.

I wear glasses for everything except shooting ,I kinda slide them to the tip of my nose while my left eye is to the viewfinder..

That might indeed work. Certainly in the days of my youth, people with a 'lazy eye' had to wear an eye patch over the 'good' eye to try and correct it. Whether that actually worked or if it was simply some quack remedy that's now been disproved, I'm not sure.

or corrective laser surgery.
Would that actually work for this? I'd have thought it was more a 'brain' thing than an eye one. Or are you perhaps suggesting zapping a chunk of brain away? ;-)

Lol..look at the Wikipedia article in my post a few lines up. It covers both methods.

Left eye dominant, tried with right but not comfortable. Problem frequently for me is my nose bumps control button changing focus point unintentionally. :-(

Hmm. Well I did just look, but it doesn't actually 'cover' the laser part!

In fact, all there is regarding it is a wikipedia note saying "clarification needed" !

Which can often mean 'unless this is backed up with evidence, consider it suspect and potentially incorrect'!!

Interesting question. I mainly use my right eye, but can use my left. I like to keep both open when I'm shooting BIF, air shows and so on.

I think most cameras are set up for right-handed people. This means that the main controls are on the right side of the camera and thus to the right of the viewfinder and often means there is more camera to the right than to the left of the viewfinder. Which means they work better with right-eye people.

I was one of those people - my vision in my right eye is significantly worse than my left but after wearing an eye patch for years I do actually use it and people don't notice my lazy eye unless I point it out to them and I'm tired! I've tried shooting right eyed but the vision is so much worse even with glasses) that I just can't! (Composition and colour placement is better though).

As someone else highlighted shooting guns - when I have done that or archery I have to use my right eye as for some reason instructors seem to think that's better than shooting left handed (despite me be fairly ambidextrous too).

I am a left eye shooter. I never thought about it, i just naturally do it this way from beginning. I never feel being restricted in accessing the ae lock button or anything while shooting.

I need to give it a shot with my right eye next time.
