External monitor for NX1 @120fps

Can NX1 be used with an external field monitor while shooting 120fps? If yes, which monitors (NOT recorders a la Atomos) would you recommend, Marshall, Ikan, MustHD, other?
 
I'll have access to a couple monitors in 2-3 weeks. I'll let you know what I find out.

This a very important thread, and I would like to know more about monitor/video recorders compatibility for both NX1 and NX500. I know it is a more video orientated issue, but these cameras are true hybrids, and it's good to know.
 
For NX500 it is not possible to get 120 fps with connected monitor.

I think with NX1 it is similar/same. Perhaps ... with NX1's faster processor?

Same with 3840x2160 etc.

The slow motion option is X0.25 in the 720p30(25 for pal) frames, though.

Do you, or anyone else, by any chance, know if is worth it to use a video recorder (Atomos style) with the NX500 and/or NX1?

What is your monitor brand?
 
Thanks, Martin! So, NX500 won't even down-sample the HDMI feed to, say 30p, while simultaneously recording 120p. Could someone with a monitor and NX1 try what Martin did with NX500? Thanks!
 
I think it's a question of speed. With NX1 you can use a smartphone(bluetooth) as monitor for 4K, with NX500 this is not possible - it is too slow.

NX500/120fps/smartphone also are not possible.

NX1/120fps ... perhaps ? ? ? Who knows?

The monitors I have access to through college are older Ikan and Marshall monitors. They are a few years old and low resolution (800 x 600 and 1280 x 720 I think). From just reading the NX1 manual, I thought they wouldn't work when I recorded in 4K, but they both did. The problem with them and/or the NX1 is that hooking up an external monitor disables the NX1 focus peaking. I found using the built-in focus peaking on those monitors isn't very accurate, I guess because of their resolution and the NX1 being 4K.

The monitor I'm going to buy when it comes out (Aputure said 3rd week of January) is this one:


Retail of $279 US. That's pretty good for a true 1080 monitor, false color, focus peaking, histogram, includes the battery and mounting arm.I hope it works well with the NX1! I'll find out and report back.

I am on holidays, when I go back to my base I'll have access to a couple of those.
I follow the specific one you are mentioning, and I want to see when it's out.

Still, I am considering an Atomos style solution as well, I am not sure what are the benefits, and I would like something that works with the NX500 as well.
 
I don't think there is a hdmi monitor that can take more than a 30fps input. That might change with newer versions of hdmi, but that won't matter as the nx1 will be stuck at the previous spec.
 
That's not the problem - you can use any (PC) monitor or tv with HDMI/60fps.

Even WDMI/HDMI (wireless HDMI) monitors for cameras have (f.e. LILLIPUT)

I don't shoot 4k, but in case folks were wondering, I checked that as well--the monitor works fine while camera records 4k. The only option that is grayed out on NX1 when I connect HDMI is the "over- / under-cranking" (x0.5, x0.25 etc).

So I guess I will just shoot in 120p (selected in Movie Size menu setting) when I need slow motion. Granted, I can't preview the slow effect until I convert the footage, but I consider that a minor inconvenience. I wonder though, is there any other reason why everyone is shooting in 30p x 0.25 overcrank mode instead of straight up 120p for slow motion?

I do not think that this is the case, I even change from PAL to NTSC to achieve 120frames and I believe most people shoot 130/100 frames for slow motion purposes.
