I believe it won't work either, as this lens focus somehow moves differently depending on the speed you turn it by.... haven't try that yet, but i get this feeling with manual focusing...
may well be the case. However zone focus is itself guesswork (guessing when the subject is in the zone). Anyone good enough at guessing the subject distance and walking speed might also be good enough at guessing the focus ring distance and speed.
You might be a good candidate for an older manual focus/aperture lens used on the M3 via an adapter. This way you won't have the lens influenced by the camera's electronics. Also, this would be a cheap fix as quality older manual lenses sell for peanuts on ebay. Also, adapters that have no electronic pass through can be bought for very little money.
As i have a avid interest in MF lenses i can tell you that to get a older MF lens to match the IQ of a modern wide angel of 22mm F2 will have to say leica, ziess or contax on it and cost more than the the M . 28mm and wider things get a LOT cheaper if you don't need F2 ..something like a canon or Minolta 28mm f2.8 are good and don't cost to much as they only adapt to mirrorless and not so well to DSLRs....i think EF to M adaptor is a good idea the canon 24mm stm will still be compact with the adaptor and has a MF/AF switch and maybe still wide enough for the street
