E18 fix !!!!!

I solved my E18 error by hitting the power button on and off until the lens finally retracted back into the camera. This happened 2 days after I bought the S400 with a perfect AF assist lamp. It's been a few months since with no problems.

you were lucky....ive tried everything.... the last resort is taking it apart, which really isnt that hard. the hard part is remembering which screws go where !

i havent had time to completely take it all apart, but when im finished ill let yall know how it went, and wether or not its working again.

E18 - 'Whack' Repair
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It could work for you! Scroll down this page for related postings. If you have no way out, your Canon warranty is expired and you don't want to take your camera apart, try this:

Smack-whack the camera several times with your open palm on the USB port side until the zoom lens engages, goes back in and starts working again.
I pressing the extended the lens gently may work for the short trem as well.

Re: E18 FIX !!!!!

My E18 problem is fixed. I didn't do the high-tech fix as described above, my fix was very low-tech. I gave it a good whack. I know, not for the faint of heart. I have a 3-year-old PowerShot S20, which is out of warranty, and I figured $200 to fix a problem that might happen again would be better spent on a new camera. I saw the whacking idea on this page http://www.camerareview.com/templates/digital_reviews.cfm?digital_id=87 and since that person had my exact same problem with the same camera, I figured why not?

My camera's lens was stuck in the extended position after the battery died and the camera turned off. After a fresh battery I turned it on, the lens made 2 small adjustments, then I heard the faintest whirring noise. During the whirring noise I smacked the camera with my open palm on the USB port side. It took 2 whacks, but then it sounded like the lens engaged. I turned it off and the lens slid right back in. So far, so good, but I hope I didn't whack anything else out of alignment.

Re: E18 FIX !!!!!

Yesterday I experienced this E18 error. So I googled and found this site.. And sort of gave up the whole thing..

But then I did like the Russian astronaut did in the movie 'Armageddon'. So I gave the camera (a S20, not S100) a solid whack on the side where the usb connector is located.. and.. bzz.. the lens went back in.. and the camera works all fine now.. ;)

(The e18 came after a power off due to bad battery status (so low that the cam didn't have time to shutdown normally and the lens was still visible)

Re: E18 FIX !!!!!

Thanks for posting the 'whack' technique! After a few whacks, my S110 no longer dies with the E18 error.

Re: E18 FIX !!!!!

Amazing! I used the whack technique just now on my 3 1/2 year old Powershot S100...I was about to give up on it.

Lo and behold, after 5 or six good whacks (on the USB side of the camera), there was noise coming from my camera, and the lens opened.

Now it's working fine again! I don't know for how long, but I'll whack it whenever it stops working.

When I had E18 error I collected lots of online suggtestions. Did you try the one below? I sent my S45 in for repair before seeing this idea so I never had chance to try it.
----------------

I just ran into trouble with my Canon Digital Ixus AiAF camera - the infamous E18 error. The lens would not retract fully into the body when turning the camera off, and the camera would complain by showing the E18 error. After reading what others had written, and observing the lens closely, I could see that slit around the slide-out part of the lens assembly seemed narrower on one side - i.e. the lens was slightly excentric. So understanding that there was not much hope otherwise, I exerted some mild force on the lens (while extended) to center it, and tried to turn the camera off - and the lens retracted some more this time. The same procedure again found the lens centered, and the camera is functioning again.

Following the procedures at that link destroyed my lens! I wrecked my S200 trying to fix the e18 error -- the lens would not retract.

The instructions are fine up until the begining of Part 5. I printed the instructions, then, as I removed screws, I actually taped them to the pictures at each step, so that I could reinstall them in the correct order and location. It was a breeze, I could have re-assembled my camera with no problem -- except that I proceeded past the point-of-no return in Parts 5 and 6.

I got to the step illustrated in the last picture in Part 5 - after "opening the lens unit", and the two tiny solenoid levers and their tiny wires came flopping out. There was no way possible for me to reinsert them back in the propper slots and fit the lens barrel back together again. I suspect I could reassemble it if I unsoldered the ribbon cable connecting the two pieces of the lens assembly, put it back together, then re-soldered the ribbon cable. But that is beyond my skills.

Beware.

Thanks Terry, however, the translation is still weird.
Wouldn't be a lot easier to click the english flag button under "Bitte wählen sie ihre Sprache" ?
(well, i guess they have a flag pic for non-german speaking folks :)
