Hi all. This is my first post to this forum so please take it easy on me. I'm finally ready to move up to FF (coming from 7D Mark ii). More so just because I want to not because I need to. That being said I've decided on a 5D Mark iii. I know when it first came out it was a home run for Canon. But now it's almost four years old. Will a four year old FF still out perform (picture quality/low light) a new crop sensor camera? I know this is a very broad question. I'm not interested in video or frame count, just picture quality.

PS I use a 24-105L & the new 70-300L now so lens upgrades will not be a factor.

Thanks in advance.

In low light, high iso - yes and by a large margin. In dyIf you want the look of full frame with it's lower depth of field then yes as well. If you have decent light there wouldn't be much in it.

Replacing the 7D2 it will have weaker AF, slower continuous shooting speeds, not as good video AF. You will, however, get great IQ and low noise at high ISO. Really different cameras for different functions. I think of the 7D2 as a low-cost 1DX and the 5D3 as a portrait, studio, or landscape camera.

You will be very happy with it. I'm sure you paid less than I did for mine. I bought mine a few years ago. The prices are good especially this time of the year. There is a rumored 5DMIV but you will pay quite a bit more.

Enjoy your new FF. I don't think you will have any regrets.

Yes.

A long time ago Babe Ruth hit a lot of Home Runs.......and they still count.

I have a pair each of the 5D Mark III and the 7D Original.

Tell you what, that 7D Mark II has me thinking of adding one to my arsenal. It pairs very, very well with the 5D Mark III.

As far a SWAPPING a 7D Mark II for the 5D Mark III, sure. But a tough decision for sure.

Could always ADD the 5D Mark III to your fantastic 7D Mark II as allowed.

I know that a lot of people will tell you to jump for 5D MK3 and not wait for 5D MK4 and in most cases i'm having the same opinion, but in this case you shoud wait a little bit since 5D MK4 is on its way . Starting with the new 1DX2 , 5D MK4 and 6D2 ,Canon it will introduce a new generation of sensors with on chip ADC and you will buy an updated sensor technology that it will serve you a lot better. So, hold on !

In a word, "yes." The full frame 5D III is still a key mid-level pro Canon camera. I shoot daily editorial work with two 5D III and love the heck out of these bad boys. Image quality is superb, the 6 fps is a bit anemic, but adequate. They have a very useful "quiet" shooting mode and excellent low light sensitivity--I've shot assignments at ISO 6400 and been delighted. Legendary autofocus nails action. These tough, weather sealed cameras are among the finest Canon ever manufactured.

I am still using my 5DII which I bought when it came out. I am waiting for the mk IV before I upgrade. I think the photos are similar to mk III but ergonomically the mk IV is much better - faster, better AF etc. If you want to see my 5DII photos just go to my flickr page and 95% are 5DII plus some Sony RX100 ones.

If you can only have one the 5DIII can offer more flexibility and its a great camera. I've had mine for 4 years and its never let me down. The 7DII is also a nice camera and yes pairing them would be great but only you can justify the extra expense.

I'm very curious to see what the 5DIV can do. I didn't buy into the 5DS or 5DSR. Took a a detour to Sony for my higher megapixel needs but really hoping the 5DIV offers a really usable upgrade. It doesn't have to be a megapixel monster just a great overall camera. If it is I probably will upgrade and sell my 7DII and 5DIII. The 5DIV and 1DX will make a kill combo IMHO.

Are you replacing the 7DII or adding to it?

Things to note:

5DIII will give improved IQ and reduced noise without doubt.

7DII I believe has better frame rates, buffer and focusing

Your lenses will lose reach at the long end so as long as a real 300mm is acceptable (compared to the equivalent 480mm) otherwise use the long lens on the 7DII or consider a 100-400L if you sell the 7DII.

When I moved from film to a APSC sensor I moaned about losing the 70mm ability of my 70-200, now a 135mm short end but loved the added reach. Then I bought a FF body and regained the 70mm end but lost the 300mm. Win some lose some!

Thanks for all your responses. I think the smart thing to do for me is wait for the 5D Mark 4.
