Just become the delighted owner of a coolpix 4300.
Can anyone answer a couple of basics I can't find in the handbook

Does the rechargeable battery (el-ion I think) have a memory effect i.e. does it need to be completely discharged before I recharge it or is it safe to recharge half way through useage?

And secondly, and I know this is a bit basic, but I love this thing, the handbook suggests that the mode dial should be moved only when the camera is off - surely it is not necessary to knock off the camera every time you change from one mode to another, or am I wrong
Thanks_

Hi James

My understanding is that you should discharge the battery fully before recharging. Mind you, I end up having to do that as I often find a battery dies on me during a day out - which is why I have two batteries for the CP 4300.

I've had no problems with changing the dial mode while the camera is on. If you choose to do so, however, I will accept no responsibility if it all goes belly-up!

Cheers

Paul

ps: make sure you post some photos for us all to have a gander at when you've got the chance.

pps: welcome to NTF!

Thanks for posting that link Tore - I'd missed that thread.

I do love this forum - it keeps reminding me how little I know!!

Cheers

Paul

I am no expert, but my understanding, based on other posts on this
forum, is that Li-ion batteries should NOT be fully discharged:

Quote: "Usage expectancy is 500 cycles at “full” discharge
(normally rated at 80% of cell capacity), or up to 1000 cycles with
only partial discharge."

Thanks to both of you for the replies - and for the welcome. Most NG's seem to be deteriorating rapidly and its refreshing to find such a friendly group.

Yes Paul, I will post some pics soon, in fact I find the posted pics the most enjoyable part of the group. However, despite taking something like 400 pics in the first week I am still perfecting my technique!
Thanks again.

James.

Hi james the battery can be charged at any time,Do make sure you allow it to drain so its dead and recharge once in a while. When the battery is new it wil not have the full charge until 3 or 4 charges down the road.As for the dial you can turn it at any time when the camera is on to go from manual to review/scene and so on.

it is unwise to run a nmh battery till it is drained as this will kill the battery...that was only needed with nicad......i run mine till it says battery exhausted on the screen cos i'm sure nikon have made it so this is the best time to charge....but if i know i will be taking alot of pics i will recharge both batts regardless

These are Lithium Ion batteries we are talking about.the newest of lithium on the market, yes you do have to let them drain once in a while so you will get years of life out of them.I suggest you do some more reading about different kinds of batteries and there construction..
