What does everybody use for remote shutter release in BULB mode? I have an A77II. Wired? Wireless? and why?

Mostly I just want something I could use for longer exposure at night so functional range isn't really important to me.

I have a wired remote for my a77ii. You don't want to press on the shutter release on the camera for long exposures because - besides being tiring - it will wiggle the camera and mess up your shot.
 
I use the first model the interval function is nice for astro photography mainly meteor showers, and time lapses, if its out side your budget there is a cheaper version, plus a wired one.

Hi there - I use this one, found by searching as below, on eBay:

Timer Remote Shutter+2.5mm Adapter Cord for Sony A900 A850 A550 A700 A55 A77 A99

It costs only about $12, and it works perfectly. It has a number of functions, including the remote (wired) release that you want. It includes free shipment from China.

i have both wired and wireless remote releases. if it's only for long exposures in BULB mode i prefer a simple cable release - being small and light it's (almost) always in my bag.

if the receiver of a wireless remote release has a hold function that also works if the batteries are empty, it's a nice solution too - unfortunately the one i use can release without batteries but has no hold functionality. so i have to make sure that the batteries are charged.

You can do time lapse with the a77ii using the free Sony software utility "Remote Camera Control"
 
I use TriggerTrap mobile. Works great as I always have my phone with me and it means I only need to carry a small cable. Gives you plenty of creative options. The only 'con' is that you have to remember to make sure your phone has plenty of charge.

the other con is that you have to have a smart phone ;-). it's a very interesting app/device though, since you can trigger the camera based on a wealth of parameters.

What you're interested in today can easily change tomorrow, and having those tools on hand can bring about that change!

Fireworks may be of interest down the road and Bulb is the best feature to use!

That one looks interesting, an expensive cable but looks like the app does a lot.

Ha Ha expensive piece of cable with a little bulge in it for the electronics. I haven't even tried using half of the functionality but as a cable release for doing simple long exposure shots, bracketed exposures and precisely timed bulb exposures it's great.
