How about some 1D speculation

Right now, you can buy a 1D for 4 grand. And I recall people mentioning getting deals looking more like $3300-$3500 from legitimate sellers (i.e. no grey market, no scams, no bait & switch). I seem to recall reading that the D2H would debut at $3,500 (probably street price, not MSRP). I expect that with the D2H coming out, that the 1D should be available new for $3k or less when that happens. What do you think?

Ah, I now see that even though Nikon officially has not annouced a price for this, Phil's preview shows it as a $3,500 "list price". Which suggests that it would be available for more likr $3,000 or so.

And now I see the alternate spec sheet on this site saying that $3,500 is the street price, not the list price. Ho hum...

With such close pricing between the two models, I don't know, there might not be such a pressure for Canon to lower it's price much on the 1D...I mean, if the Nikon were incredibly cheap relative to the Canon, then Canon might feel the pricing pressure....it seems like it would take much more to get folks to switch their equipment over to Nikon....heck, I wonder if Canon will be affected at all by the new D2H. I think that only the release of a new 1D version will affect the price of the old one.

I am mostly impressed by the fact that the release of a new professional model of camera is being released at $3500 or so.... that's about $1500 cheaper or more than any "new pro release"* of which I am aware. That's the kind of kind of trend that I like!

Talking about this "latest and greatest" gadget stuff is a great pleasure for me....it almost feels like talking sports. Go figure.

$3599....I'm sure it'll come down more after the D2H is released.

Nikon releases D2H for $3000 and Canon follows with an updated 1D called the 1De (e for enhanced) 6.3MP 1.6x factor. Same features as the 1D but with the 6.3MP CMOS sensor and Digic processor. List price $3200 with a street price of $2999. Older 1D drops in price to $2000 and 10D price drops to $1250. 1Ds price remains the same.
How do you think that would affect the market share?

When the Nikon executives are asked by the press to comment on Canon's move, the response is "Oh Cr@p". Three weeks later, Nikon files for Chapter 11 and is acquired by Fuji. The new company will be called Fujikon and as a result, Canon will raise their prices 25% claiming sensor shortages are the cause of the increase.

Please no.

Not a 1.6 FOV.

Leave it at 1.3 or go FF.

In looking here:

I see:

"By increasing the surface area of the sensor's photodiodes, the sensor
elements that receive light, Nikon was able to improve the contrast and
color gradations of images"

I wonder how much of an improvement it will be.

The mean reasons I would expect the 1D to be dropped in price (as some others have also pointed out) are:

1) With the 1D being two years old, Canon could afford to (this is the biggest)

2) It would be a good idea for the good old sake of being competitive.

This revelation comes from my 14 year old's girl friend's step mother who operates a taco food wagon in Sony's parking lot each noon.

According to her this "side focus issue" requires that the images be viewed from the right edge. A photo shop plug-in fix is in the works and should be ready for sale the first quarter or second quarter of 2004. The plug-in will cost $500 but there will be a $50 mail in rebate which will be outsourced to Viking.

Let's keep this inside information to ourselves lest the Nikon owners dump their systems in favor of Canon and thus create shortages.
