I lazily use an iPad for much of my posting. It has a nice little Logitech keyboard that makes it quite quick to use.

But there is a terrible problem on the dpreview site (alone).

When I use the finger scroll up and sometimes (perhaps an accidental finger brush on the screen) and the cursor goes off somewhere on a mind of its own. Most of the time I figure out what is wrong and fix it before a devastating event.

But occasionally something happens - it happens so quickly that I just don't know what has happened.

It seems that in the typing rush I backspace a couple of times quickly to correct an error and kerpow! My carefully engineered post is completely deleted!

If this is 15 minutes of work then I am quite devastated by the process.

Does anyone else have a similar problem and have they worked out what is actually causing it?

Many browsers, when the cursor is not in a text box, convert the backspace button into a "Display previous web page" button. This may be why you are losing your carefully prepared posts.

How you end up out of the text box would require me seeing it happen...and my guess would be that if you could see what was happening, you could solve/prevent/avoid it.

A possible work-around (I do not consider work-arounds to be solutions) would be to type your post in something like notepad, then copy & paste into the forum's text box.

I hear you, the DPR site does some weird things, both with my desktop and on my iPad, it can be very frustrating.

Try and cut and paste a sentence in your iPad, once you cut, it's all gone forever.

another super annoying thing is I will have spent 30 minutes writing a detailed reply, then jump over to my Flickr or other page to grab a link or text, then jump back and the page reloads and all my work is just gone forever, accidentally touch a link on the page, when you return, everything is gone.

Other sites don't behave this way, so it's not just the iOS acting up.

Sometimes I will try and embed a jpg from a link and it's not there when I click post and the reply is committed, I've had to try 5 times and then switch between my iPad and desktop(or the other way around) to get it to work.

Sometimes I'll post some pictures and there are extra exif data around the pictures, I don't know if everyone sees what I see or if it still looks normal to them.

The last few months I've seen another new issue, when the reply box is finished loading, I'll touch the screen where I want to enter my text, the keyboard comes up, I type my stuff, or backspace to delete some words then look up to see nothing there or changed, I scroll down and the curser is in my signature area and has caused all kinds of damage.

When I updated my iOS last, I spotted some weird things on eBay, I normally just open links in new tabs, but for some reason the original page starts loading the link the moment I lift my finger off the link to tap "open in new tab", so I end up with 2 identical pages, and I keep having to tap the back arrow to return to the original page.

I don't have any AF lenses, so if I want a picture, I have to do more than squeeze a button.

Using a physical keypad in conjunction with an iPad can result in flying fingers accidentally brushing the screen with unintended consequences. Unfortunately this seems an unfortunate trade-off.

This seems related to my problem. I have also had problems where after re-positioning the screen the cursor has gone off somewhere else but in a not visible state. When I type away no characters appear. I search for the cursor often only some randomly inserted text identifies where it has been. This can include the title bar or in the signature area. I now re-position off the text area - which helps a little.

On my laptop, I can highlight and delete with one motion. I still haven't figured out what motion it was though.

So I was just making a post in the FE forum, I would copy a link from a different tab, then paste it and then delete the tail end that isn't needed, no prob, I then did the same thing a few more times, I pasted the next link, the curser shows at the end of the link, so I would press the back space and the curser would jump to the beginning of my just pasted link and I would start erasing the previous link, it happened again with the next link too, the next one I only tapped the back space once, indeed it did jump and deleted the return so it was ready to delete the last character of the previous link on the next tap of the back space.

I have also noted issues when trying to accurately placing the curser, sometimes it just doesn't do what it's supposed to do, I haven't figured out if it's the forum code, an iOS bug, or a combination of the two not playing well together.

I can honestly say that I only experience these problems with DPR.

I suggest it is the latter, as I don't seem to have any real problems when using a regular computer. My guess it is the interaction between the touch and keyboard interface. Something is sending off a random postioning code from the touch screen that is not updating the keyboard cursor position on the screen. Therefore the actual input position is not where it appears to be on the screen.

As a result I can get other weird things such as typing away in the body of text where the cursor appears to be but nothing happens. Only to find that the text is being inserted somewhere else randomly either in body of the text and even in the heading. This seems to be also associated with the frequent need to tap twice to get something to happen. I have typed manfully away with the cursor at the foot of the text and nothing is happening. Another touch and it is working. On proof reading the text has "a nonsense" part in it due to this random unknown insertion - mind well that I do write real nonsense often ... ;)

Similarly a delete key that does not seem to have worked when if repeated is acting on a part of the screen otherwise unknown and can have the disastrous consequences of deleting the whole post.
