Sony and Canon are doing worse then Nikon? That would be a shocker for some :)

I think you should quote the original source:

But comparing % like this is very misleading without the absolute numbers because their starting points are all different.

Thom actually wrote about this before:

Without the actual units sold - it doesn't tell me much.

In theory but lets say:

Company A increased its sales by 1 from a base of 1 - growth rate = 100%

Company B increased its sales by 1 Million from a base of 10 M - growth rate = 1%

So the headline now becomes - Company A beats Company B in sales growth 100 times!!! Company A is dead in the water, Company B is the future!

But can you really tell how well the 2 companies are doing against each other without other pieces of information? Mathematically it is a correct statement as you say - it is an apples to apples comparison in math. But not an Apples to Apples comparison in reality.

I would say we are missing key pieces of information to really come to a conclusion on the state of the businesses.

Percentages actually tells you a lot and it's the equalizer that compares apples to apples.

All of these companies have sufficient sales that quantization is not even remotely an issue. I am also sure someone that has sales go down 30% in his/her division should worry about being fired where as an 11% drop - it might be a year before their head is chopped off.

All numbers share a common theme the whole business is changing and at a huge rate. Hopefully they all have a strategy to survive and that hopefully isn't one about iterating faster with more pixels, faster focus, more FPS. Or trying to grab more MS in a falling climate, or squeeze cost out of the system.

The question to ask is what business am I in, and how can I re-invigorate it?

I was looking at one of our better known stores here in NZ (we only have 3 or 4 worth doing business with) and was surprised to see that as the version 2 A7 bodies in each series are coming out, the prices have jumped considerably.

For example, a Sony A7 s Mk2 body now retails for NZ$1300 more than a Nikon D810....

The last versions were the other way around.

Is that a good sign? Most people don't need a DSLR for sexting. They are pussy and not pixel peepers. :)

I suspect the DSLR will lose the real estate photographers too. The wide angle capability of the phone camera is good enough for webpage display.

It does rather show you why you can't really trust sales numbers, even if your talking interchangeable lens cameras theres a BIG difference between a higher end FF model and an entry level APSC model.

The entry industry is moving more towards higher end sales and who is maintaining or growing there market there is really the key issue.
