Any suggestions on a tripod mount system for the Nikon 200-500. I currently have a Manfrotto QR system, but the lens tends to rotate an am not sure if the QR is adequate. I will use the lens on a monopod or handheld.

You have not said which Manfroto head - but many have very small QR plate surfaces compared to many other brands, with swivel problems using a range of equipment being a common complaint.

As the 200-500 tripod collar has a large footprint it might be cheaper to get a different brand of head with a larger QR plate. Your nearest camera shop might have something suitable for you to try.

Often good photography is about being in the right place at the right time with the right kit and especially with the right experience.
You can buy kit. The rest is mainly down to you.

I have the 234RC2 which I use on the monopod. I think that is too light. I also have a 486RC2 which I normally use on my tripod.
The QR plate on either model has a small footprint, which means less friction when expecting it to securely hold in place a big and heavy lens like the 200-500.

A different collar is close to a waste of money attached to a small (for the size and weight of the lens) QR plate.

For historical reasons (I could not find anything better 15 years ago) my starting point is a Gitzo heavy duty head with a long plate. There are now many alternative heavy duty long plate options that cost less than Gitzo.

Ball heads are not the best thing to use for long lens.

I wasted a lot of $$ on them before changing to a gimbal head with a swiss arca type plate, i converted all my ballheads and monopod to the swiss arca type and only use the ball heads for my shorter lenses.

You can buy conversion plates for you Manfrotto ball heads so you don't need to replace them.

I've thought of a gimbal, but I don't think the weight of the 200-500 requires it. I've used this lens on the Arca Swiss Z1 and RRS BH-55 with no problems. I also find it relatively easy to hand hold - much more so than the 300/4 AF-S with or without TC1.4.

The OP asks for suggestions on a 200-500 tripod mount, I haven't had good luck using ball heads for long lenses, I loosened one too much once and almost cut my finger off when it fell sideways on my hand.

Yes you can shoot the 200-500 handheld but I did not suggest that because that's what they do now.

The gimbal is about the perfectly balanced movement control not the weight.

Thanks Bob W.

I agree. I don't have the 200-500, but I use a Jobu Jr. 3 gimbal with my 150-600 Sport and it works great. I don't like using a ball head for long lenses either.

Yes I bought the induro GHB1 the only problem was I had two really good Manfrotto ballheads and using two different plates was a pain so I converted everything to the swiss arca type now one plate fits all.

I think I might have misled everyone. I am using it on a monopod not a tripod. The Manfrotto 234rc2 was not adequate. I went with the Sirui G-20x, ballhead and got a longer plate similar to the red one in your photo above.

Bob, What is that red Arca-Swiss plate you are using. I don't think I've ever seen a red plate!
