do most 414 owners use? Usually my camera is left in the auto mode and I shoot using the 640x480 and standard quality. Sometimes going up to the 1280x960 size. I do save ALL my photos on the pc and then to cd-r's. Just curious as to what others use mostly.

Thanx,

I typically shoot in auto-portrait or auto-landscape, depending if I want a big or small f-stop. I use fine quality and 2272x1704 for all shots. This provides most quality/flexibility for post processing/enlargement and CF and PC storage is pretty inexpensive these days.

Cheers,
Richard.

If you mostly shoot at 640x480, why did you go for a 4 MP camera?? At that resolution, you're only using about 0.3 MP, or less than 1/10 th the available resolution (and quality).

I usually save in Fine at largest size. Download direct to CD-R and then select / manipulate any that I want to work on at a later date. I only save to PC any that I specifcally want to store for rapid access against specific subject headings (Wife's China Painting, Garden Design etc). If I am looking for a particularly important shot I will try to save in Tiff, but even with a 256 mb car thei only give me 21 frames.

Brian,

This is a very good suggestion, I also shoot in the same format, and my PC's hard drive is filling up quick. The only good thing is that I have my screen saver set to cycle through all the pics that I have taken, so I get to see them all. The lack of space is becoming a problem though. I think I will start saving them on CDR's and moving only the 'good' ones to the PC's hard drive.

Thanks!

Kevin

Well I have an s404 which is very similar to your camera. I usually use the manual setting, there are lots of good options in there that aren't available in automatic. In fact I can't remember the last time I used automatic. And yeah, I'm like the other guys who use "fine" and the largest pic size available. I just make sure that I have lots of memory with me (and xtra batteries :p).

Oh yeah I forgot that I bracket pretty much all my pictures. It's worthwhile to help ensure you get the "right" exposure, although sorting through them all later is a litte, uh, "character building"....

You are only benefiting from a fraction of the quality your camera can offer at 640x480 unless you are recording things for the web. Like most of the others I always use 4MP ie 2272x1704 and fine quality. If something is very important I use a TIFF. The other thing I am doing increasingly is using the auto bracketing feaure, although the metering is pretty accurate a 0.5 change either side can make quite a difference ( in the past it was too expensive to do that with slide film but now it costs nothing).

......for all your help. You are right about it costing 'nothing' with a digital camera. Guess I am still in the 35mm mode! I am going to be experimenting with the additional features as I get the time. It is easy to resize the photos. The auto bracketing feature sounds like a good idea. I will probably have more questions later, and I know that reliable answers will come through this forum.

Hi Judy,

On the S414 and S404 auto bracketing takes a series of three pictures, but varying the exposure for each. One at what the camera thinks is the correct exposure, one overexposed and one underexposed.

You can activate the feature via the drive mode button. This is the middle button of the three buttons on the top of the camera. Once you have activated the mode, use a half press to lock focus as usual and then hold the shutter down and the camera will take three pictures in quick sucession.

Hope this helps,
Richard.

Richard has described nicely how to set your camera for auto bracketing. You can vary how much over or under exposed the pictures are on either side of the main one by going into multi mode and Custom 1, I think it is 3rd one down allows you to vary the exposure value by 0.3, 0.5, or 1.0. In practice I have found that 0.5 is generally more helpful. 1.0 tens to be too big a difference.

It is easy to resize the photos.
I hope what you mean by that is that it is easy to make them smaller later. If you shoot at 640x480, you can tell your computer to resize them bigger later, but it won't be any better. You should always shoot at the resolution you think you'll need or HIGHER.

You probably already knew that, but there are several newbies reading this thread and they need to know that they shouldn't shoot small to save space and then resize up in Photoshop or whatever later. That's penny-wise and pound-foolish.

Guess I am not to good at expressing what I think. You said it better than I could. Us rookies need a pow'rful lot 'o learnin'. Thanx again.
