How many photos do you have in your catalog?
Where is your catalog located? On a system drive, on a drive connected by a USB cable (and if so, what kind? USB 2 or USB 3?), or is it a network drive; and if so, what speed networking are you using? What is your drive's RPM? Or is it a SSD?

What exactly is getting slower and slower.
There are so many different settings in Lr that can speed things up or slow things down.
In recently watched some video and this guy claimed that Lr added files 600 times slower than some other software, C1 was one of the programs that was suposed to be quicker.
So I tried it myself.
Lr took 15s to import 30 raw files and build previews.
Capture 1 took 35s to import the same 30 raw files and build previews.
Conclusion, this guy probably had Lr set to build smart previews.

Try turning off the option for using the graphics processor.
1:1 previews are only seen in the Library Module. Generate them during import, rate your images and get rid of bad exposures and pics of your feet or the lens cap, then delete the 1:1 previews and replace them with Minimal or Standard size previews.
Don't create Smart Previews unless you absolutely need them, then delete them ASAP.
Be sure you have a big enough cache folder.
Optimize your Master Catalog.
Run disk defrag on you your OS, Master Catalog disk, and image storage disks.

If this is whilst you're in the Library module, the biggest slowdown I've experienced has been after leaving the Metadata window set to show "EXIF and IPTC", thus....
Reverting to "Default", or almost any of the other settings, will speed up image browsing immensely!

This is because LR shows thumbnails in the film strip but for the main window always generates a full sized image from the RAW file with all the edits. The more edits, the longer it takes LR to generate the image. The Spot Removal brush especially slows down LR so I never use it for more than a couple of edits. If I need extensive spot removal I Export the image to Photoshop.
Lens Corrections for distortion, vignetting, and chromatic aberration require completely recalculating all pixel positions and values so it is a time consuming operation. If speed is of concern you should save this operation for last, not make it part of your Import Quick Develop settings.

I've been thinking of switching to Capture One, too. I'm starting to move away a little from the catalog idea, I think the 'Sessions' will be useful for me.
I tried C1 before and really liked it, but eventually gave up on it because I was just so familiar with Lr that it ended up being slower for me. That was on a different computer, so I may try it again. Phase One offers a generous 60-day trial, so I may be able to be more efficient with it.

The only thing holding me back from switching completely are the Capture One are retouching tools. I MUCH prefer the way lightroom does it. I hate having to use and create layers etc. If im going to do that I might as well use photoshop and get all the power behind it. But the color adjustments from C1 are amazing.

Always check integrity and optimise catalogue - I suggest once a day, on exit.
No point whatsoever in creating a new catalogue . Performance doesn't depend on catalogue size.

Do you use LR mobile?
Turn it off when you are not using it. I have found that I occasionally get real slow performance in Develop when I have forgotten to turn off the LR Mobile sync.
