27mm vs. X100

I just gave my X100 to my wife, and I already miss it. An inexpensive alternative to buy another X100 (original, S or T) would be to mount the 27mm on the XT1 or XE1 I already have. Size would be similar. Do you know how the 27mm compares in IQ with the 35mm equivalent on the X100 series?

IQ of the 27mm is fine but it does't make the X-T1 an X100T. There is much more to the X100.

I cannot be much help on the comparison but I've just bought a 27mm for my X-M1 and it makes a really nice, pocketable camera.

The XT1 is a far superior camera to the X100/s/t. The only disadvantage is no HSS in the XT1, but as far as controls, ergonomics, focusing, etc, all better in the XT1.

Regarding the lens, the 27mm is only f2.8 vs the X100/s/t having f2. In practice, however, if you want good sharpness, you will need to shoot the X100/s/t at f2.8 or smaller apertures. The 27mm is very sharp at f2.8.

The 27 is a decent lens but it's a F2.8 lens. However, the X100t lens isn't the greatest at F2 anyway.

Advantages of using the XT-1 with the 27 other than what's already been mentioned is that you gain the tilting screen (which can be nice when trying to be as discreet as possible) and you do have the ability to use other lenses. A really idea setup would be the 27 on an XT-10 which is actually a shorter length body than the X100t, plus you get most of the advantages of the XT-1.

At any rate, while the XT-1 with 27 is a slightly bigger camera than the X100t, the difference in size really is very small.

The X100S/T and the X-T1 are basically different cameras but I wouldn't go so far as to say the X-T1 is a far superior camera.

I'm not even sure about the controls/ergonomics being better, they're just different.

Can't comment about autofocus speed because I don't own an X-T1 but I think most of the hype about autofocus speed and accuracy is just that; hype and a lot of that would depend on what lens was attached to the X-T1.

I love Fuji cameras but don't think any of their models are going to win contests associated with focusing.

Have to disagree just a bit here, also.

I have an X100S that I mostly use for indoor family type snapshots and have no complaints about that lens at f/2 .

The 23mm (35mm equivalent) is great for normal size rooms and reasonably good sharpness has never been a problem at apertures larger than 2.8.

Here is a sample at 2.5:

This is only a quick snapshot and I may not have even been holding the camera steady but overall sharpness is still pretty darn good.

Fuji X100 colour (bayer) can't be beaten by any other Fuji camera.

In any reasonable display format you won't be able to see any significant difference.

In my opinion, the new lens about to be released should have been a 23mm f2 and not another 35mm. But that I imagine Fuji think would reduce sales of the x100t and we can't have that now!

The 27mm is well behaved at f/2.8 and won't give you a funny glow when close focusing. Of course the FOV is narrower. I got mine, along with X-E1 about a month ago, and recently took it on vacation. Fit perfectly in the pocket of my bermuda shorts for several long days of walking. The resale market is pretty strong for that lens so, if you don't like it, you could get most of your $$$ back.

But Fuji already makes the great 23mm 1.4 lens and the only negative thing about that lens is that it costs about $900.00

So, not Fuji's strongest prime effort, but then it's tiny and affordable. It's know for it's superb resolution across the frame, particularly stopped down. Arguably one of Fuji's best landscape lenses, if you like the focal length.

I'm not sure how that compares to the X100 lens.

Totally subjective. Look at Flickr and see what you prefer. I have the X100T, my wife shoots an E1 with the 27. I prefer the draw of the 23, she prefers the 27.

Are you sure it's not just your copy? I haven't noticed any vignetting with my 27, I'm pretty sure I would have noticed 2EV darkening at the edges.

PS I've just check both JPEG and RAW on images with this lens at f2.8- no significant vignetting that I can see.

While I have not done a formal test, photozone has, and shows those numbers.

I do know the lens generates raw files that have embedded distortion and vignetting profiles that CaptureOne finds (most XF primes do not have a profile). Adjusting the vignetting slider from zero to 100% does indeed make quite a difference.

But again this is only wide-open. Stop it down and the vignetting rapidly disappears.

I have an X100T and vignetting and distortion isn't an issue at all. It's all corrected in camera.
