I suppose this means no D2X this year?

D2H sounds great, but us D1X users are naturally looking for the higher resolution D2X. With this D2H not shipping until Q4, then I'd guess we're looking at a D2X announcement in September/October and availability in Q1/Q2 2004.

I have to admit I'm a bit disappointed -- I was hoping for a D2X in November for my birthday.

If I had to guess, I would say next Feb at the PPA show, or whatever that biggie show is. :)

In another post Phil says that according to Nikon we might have a wait on our hands. It seems that Nikon did not leak any indication on the time to expect it. Even the rumor loving Chasseur D'images has not comment on this issue and may be no clue. My guess is that it is going be announced in two to four months. That woulld make it around 1 year after the 1Ds. I do not think Nikon would want to wait longer than that. With the kind of secrecy Nikon proved it could maintain with the D2H, we are likely not going to hear about it until within the month before the announcement. The rumors from various sources this year indicate that Nikon was trying various sensors from various vendors and showed some prototypes to some people. It will be interesting to know if they will use a third party sensor or if this was a smokescreen while they were developing a high resolution version of their in house sensor. On a side note, if Nikon maintains a 2-3 year product cycle for their pro line, they are probably diong their best planning something that can stand the developments in such a period as much as possible, including a 1Ds replacement in midway of the D2X life.

Adding to rumours of " sensors from various vendors", the following Sony announcement has promise for landscapes, portraits etc,

Sony claims improved colour, 30% power reduction, and faster record & playback processing.

I spoke with the Nikon rep in my area yesterday (who happened to be visiting a local large photo store). He indicated that Fuji is holding a big regional sales meeting in October. He indicated that whenever this happens (regional meeting), it signals the release of a whole series of new major products. So he is betting that something big will be released (or at least advertised) in the Fall.

Ben, I think that October is when the D2h, new lenses and flashgun will become available in the shops. Three months from yesterdays announcement sounds about par for the course with Nikon.

I don’t know when we will see a D2x, but from what I have read, I don’t think it will be this year.

If they follow the D1 series pricing scheme, the D2X when it comes out should list for $1,000 more than the D2H, or about $4,500. That would be a great price for a 10 to 12 megapixel top-of-the-line digicam.

The following is a quote from the press release for the LBCAST. It says "They will be installed in digital SLR (single-lens reflex) cameras slated for release in the fall." Cameras slated for release in the fall. Not "a camera".

Nikon Develops Faster Image Sensor For Digital Cameras

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Nikon Corp. (7731) has developed new technology for image sensors used in digital cameras that enables them to read data about twice as fast as current standard models, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun learned Thursday.

Nikon will begin volume production of the new sensors -- which serve as electronic eyes in digital cameras -- as early as this month. They will be installed in digital SLR (single-lens reflex) cameras slated for release in the fall.

but will be announced later this year.

Let's hope it's not more than this. I too am disappointed, but I'll be happy if I don't have to pay 8K for a 10-12 megapixel camera. That kind of pricing ($4-5K), along with that much resolution and the features of the new sensor (lower noise, less power consumption, etc.) would probably be enough to make the camera very, very competative against the 1Ds. And love canon or hate canon, competition always benefits the consumer.

Why would a Fuji** regional sales meeting result in Nikon deciding to announce their new D2X - I could see this being true for a Nikon sales meeting, but Fuji???

They will make more than one D2H for sure. :-)

I really think Nikon should price their new D2? cameras in line with D1?. Due to its 1.5x FOV, Nikon has cost advantage to price the new cameras right and crush Canon's cost ineffective 1.3x, 1x FOV cameras.

One thing I see is that the price trend is not proportional to the digital camera ownership, which means digital cameras are overpriced items so far. $3000 EOS D30 was a bargain three years ago. Yeh, right. I predicted big price drop on D30's successors and no one would believe.

The right price for top Nikon in the near future should be: F5 price + image sensor cost. Memory, processors are cheap and cheaper, few mechanical parts in DSLR, a lot carry-over parts or design from film body. So why pay $4500 for D2X or the next best thing? It's probably no big deals for pros who make money out of their DSLRs. What about the rest of us (I mean a lot of us) who don't?

My points are made and I'll happy to see more DSLRs no matter the price. I just buy a DSLR that's priced right for me. Time is not on my side yet.

Anyway, nice work Nikon on D2H. I though Nikon has been sleeping on piles of D1?. They proved me wrong.
