42mp file is huge and the resolution may not be necessarily needed by many users. What is your setting for it?

why not go with an a7 ii in that case?

you cant be hard up for cash if the a7r ii was your choice of camera so bit of extra storage shouldnt matter.

Would be silly to buy that $3200 42MP camera then? Those users would just get an A7 II, A7S, etc..

Shoot RAW 42 Megapixel files, process in Capture one, then export as 24 MP jpgs (or even smaller, if web display is your main use).

But never shoot a 42 MP camera at anything less than 42 MP :)

I wish there was a smaller RAW output. I shoot 42MP RAW when i'm doing landscapes and architecture, its amazing, but it's completely overkill for street photography or taking happy snaps.

I considered keeping my A7II and alternating, but then that would also be overkill.

The ultimate for me, would be an option for 24, 32 and 42 MP RAW files.

I also keep a Fuji X100T for smaller work.

For happy snaps, jpg is good enough, right? I usually take RAW+JPG, if the occasion warrants I save the RAWS for further processing, if not, I just copy the JPGS.

I would not want to decide "in the field" what resolution to use. And you can bet, as soon as you set your camera to low res, some DREAM SHOT comes along and you will be kicking yourself for not having the best resolution :)

Funny thing, that happened to me last night. An amazing sunset was going on and I rushed out with my camera and started shooting.

When I got home I realized they were all in JPG. AAAAHH!

They actually turned out alright, but im still a bit bummed.

Here's one of the shots

Very very nice photo !!! Very wide, but this one works. What lens dod you use?

I always shoot RAW+JPG, even if later I decide to not even download the RAW files from the card.... I never change that setting. Storage is so cheap these days. Regrets are not...

I use the highest resolutions available in the A7Rii except for Super 35 4K video but do like the FF 4K video too.

Thanks. That was shot with the 16-35 f4. I walked straight over to the waters edge and started shooting, but it just looked like any other photo of the bay, so I stepped back and took in the footpath and tables which gave it a more realistic feel.

I also shot this one from a similar position ...

Yes, it is the footpath and the tables that draw you into the image. Really nice. Gorgeous sky too!

RAW = 42 mpx.

I'm hoping the upcoming uncompressed lossless file format will eventually have a compressed lossless option, and/or that Adobe's DngConverter compresses the uRAW.

RAW and small JPEG, generally.

switch to forced APS-C mode and get 18mp raw files... from a cropped area of the sensor.
