>> Challenge 47 : announcement and info <<

I was a little anxious as well.

I hope people just need some time to make the switch in their mind to such a topic and then they burst into creativity......

I'll guess I have to prepare some advertising for the challenge when I get home.

Willem
Surprised to see so few in the Eligible gallery so far. Am I
expecting too much? Maybe too soon after the weekend?

Maybe there's not as much interest in the subject as could be?
Maybe you guys are just chicken to tackle this particular subject
theme?

LOL (just kidding on the chicken part)

I think this is one of the most challenging topics the stf has seen. And challenging is only a good thing. It takes a little different angle to tackle. I'm sure it just takes a bit longer for the images to come. I sure would love to see more of them.

Taking the photo or adding a "tag line" or message under the image?
Just curious?

Thanks MFC for hosting the previous challenge and thanks to all
participants. Hope you can all find the energy and time to
participate in the next one as well. Remember, these challenges are
open to anyone, and the eligible category is open to anyone using a
Sony camera, so don't hold back.

This morning, I did the pre-announcement of the new challenge topic
here :
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1009&message=5613582

Challenge 47 topic is ADVERTISEMENT and I leave it fully to your
own interpretation and imagination what you want to advertise for.

The galleries are here, including a gallery with some examples :
http://www.pbase.com/stfchallenge/challenge_47advertisement_hosted_by_willem

You might initially think of a product shot, and these can be very
challenging and rewarding, but it does not have to be a product
shot, it can be anything, here are just a few things you can
advertise for :
  • your home town as if it is for a travel brochure.
  • your grandmothers cookies
  • yourself as president
  • to stop kids from smoking cigarettes
  • to collect money for humanitarian aid
  • to get yourself started as professional photographer
  • to sell your house
  • to sell jewellery
  • to stimulate your husband to bring flowers
And Mark J suggested some more approaches :
  • You can be humorous and change the text on a food label and make
an ad out of it.
  • You can be sarcastic and advertise your mother-in-law.... for
sale LOL
  • You can be serious and photograph a bottle of wine and make it
look like a magazine ad.
  • You can even take a photograph of a city tourist attraction and
advertise it like a travel place.
Thanks Mark.

The list is really endless. So get your creative juices flowing,
get inspired by advertisement you see around, think about the
message you want to get across and then photograph it in the
strongest way you can think of.

Use props, use lighting, use color, use atmosphere, use humor.
Needless to say: keep it decent.

ONE RESTRICTION : The challenge should be around expressing your
message with images, not with words. Therefore you can only add a
MAXIMUM OF 10 WORDS to the image using Photoshop or any other
editing software.

You may use the title of your image, you may photograph text as
part of your image, but you cannot add more then 10 words to the
picture using editing. You should try to get the message across
with the image itself.

And the voting will decide on how well you have done so.

Please feel free to ask questions.

Challenge 47 has begun...galleries have been set up. You will have
two full weekends to obtain images, and the entry starting time
began immediately after the C46 results announcement.

And copied from the previous challenges, here are the further
instructions to help things run smoothly...thanks for reading this
stuff:
  • Four (4) images are allowed in each of the two galleries
(Eligible and Exhibition).
  • Those who prefer to have critiques of their photos to be more
"critical", please mark the title with an asterisk ( ).
  • Please put your name and a unique title on each of your image
thumbnails. It really helps to keep voting problem issues to a
minimum.
  • Please resize your images to no larger than 800 pixels on the
longest side before uploading to pBase... can be larger if a
panoramic image. This cuts down on too much usage, and it helps to
preserve the quality of your image upload for best viewing.
  • Please don't move images around in the galleries...respect
first-come-first-serve. If you alter an image in any way, please
replace it at the end of the gallery when uploading again. This
should avoid any confusion...and everyone will be treated equally.
  • Please keep your questions and concerns posted in this thread for
best response. One of us will address them as soon as possible.
  • Challenge time period will run from the time of the challenge 46
results announcement until Tuesday, July 29th, 2003, at 1 am EST
(New York time). Note this is 3 HOURS LONGER than normal, I live in
Denmark and did not want to get up at 4am to post closing messages
!!! Time tables will be posted in the galleries. A separate voting
thread will be posted shortly after the end of the Challenge period.
  • Eligible images must be taken with a Sony digital camera within
the Challenge time period. The winner of this gallery will host the
next Challenge.
  • Exhibition images can be obtained with any camera at any time. If
you do not want to host the next Challenge, this is the gallery you
should post your images to.
  • Those not familiar with uploading images to pbase can view this
link for instructions: http://www.pbase.com/stfchallenge/howto
  • Remember, the login name to pbase is "stfchallenge"; and the
password is "stfpost".

Everyone please join in on the fun...veterans and newcomers alike.
It's really all about fun and sharing our common interest in
photography. Please elaborate any of your techniques...everyone
welcomes an opportunity to learn something new, something to try. I
really look forward to your enthusiastic participation! Go
advertise, get your message across!

Sincerely,

Willem

Well, one hard thing is trying to make a photo that actually sells something. I almost never take pictures for that reason... Possibly the most difficult thing might be the text:
  • how to come up with a tag line and fonts that work well together with the image
  • placing the text in the image, using the right color, font size, transparency, etc etc
Usually it's just cropping, angles, DOF, light, colors and so on - the text is the extra element. I don't think people have to think about these things very often, with everyday photography. That's why this topic such a good thing too! Makes you rack your brain in a different way. I have some serious trouble thinking of lines / product names that don't sound just down right rediculous! And it's fun too.

message you want to get across and then photograph it in the
strongest way you can think of.

Thanks MFC for hosting the previous challenge and thanks to all
participants. Hope you can all find the energy and time to
participate in the next one as well. Remember, these challenges are

here :
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1009&message=5613582

One of the best ways to come up with a design for this sort of thing is to look through magazines which have advertisements of the sort you wish to do. For instance, magazines targeting connoisseurs of wine and/or cigars will have a very different style of advertising than those you might find in something like "Good Housekeeping" or "Gone Fishing."

You don't have to copy a design exactly, but even if you do, your photo will likely change the look totally, so it's not something to worry overmuch about for a challenge like this. Look at the layout-- does the text layer over the image? Are there vertical or horizontal line movements in the ad? Is the image kind of oversized or is it in perspective (more like reality)? Is the text fat, skinny, plain, stately, conservative, jazzy, knarly, distressed, frilly, swashy, cutesy, white, yellow, red, black, gray, or brown? Is the text serif or sans serif? Does the ad use more than one font? More than two (usually "less is more when it comes to fonts--better to use different versions of the same font, i.e. bold, italic, etc.)? Does the text have a shadow? If so, do you like that or does it look more sophisticated without? Is sophisticated even what you want?

For copy (tag lines or slogans, if you will), look through magazines, the phone book (if your phone book carries ads), newspapers, etc. Don't stick to looking only at the type of "product" you want to design for. Sometimes one type of product's copy will work in a fun way for a totally different kind of product (could you use copy for a motorcycle ad in an ad for butter?). A fun thing to do is to go through magazines and pick out a bunch of words that sound good. Make a list of these words, then when you get tired of doing this, go through your list and see if you can come up with a slogan using two or three words off of your list.

For instance, there is an ad on TV right now and it's packed with what I call power words. Two words in one of the phrases they used was "moves California." "Moves" is kind of a cool word all by itself. I live in California, so that could work very well for me with just about any kind of product or service. Water is a subject I want to do an ad for (if I find the time), because water is a big deal here in California (it's a huge political issue for the agriculture industry in particular). So now I have "water," "moves," and "California." One of the water sites I found has "Consider the source" as a partial slogan, as well as "It's in our hands" as part of another slogan. Look at all the words I have to work with now.

I think I might try "California Water: Consider the Source." Or maybe "Water. "It's In Our Hands." Or maybe "Water California: Consider The Alternative." It doesn't matter if I really liked "moves" yet didn't end up using it for these samples. Nope, doesn't matter at all, because it served its purpose by getting my brain primed to start thinking about ideas.

Hmmm.... looks like I still have some work to do, though. Stay tuned. ;-)

Taking the photo or adding a "tag line" or message under the image?
Just curious?
Well, one hard thing is trying to make a photo that actually sells
something. I almost never take pictures for that reason... Possibly
the most difficult thing might be the text:
  • how to come up with a tag line and fonts that work well together
with the image
  • placing the text in the image, using the right color, font
size, transparency, etc etc

Usually it's just cropping, angles, DOF, light, colors and so on -
the text is the extra element. I don't think people have to think
about these things very often, with everyday photography. That's
why this topic such a good thing too! Makes you rack your brain in
a different way. I have some serious trouble thinking of lines /
product names that don't sound just down right rediculous! And it's
fun too.

Coincidence or not, I find it slightly strange that two of my comments to challenge 47 have disappeared from Pbase. I'd rather see my posts undeleted, since I'm sure there has been nothing against the rules or good manners in those posts.

If someone deletes their image, then reloads it again (as if a new image), all of the posts attached to the original would disappear. It's too bad, but there isn't much to be done about it. If people only replace their image, then posts wouldn't be deleted unless someone did it on purpose. Are you sure that your posts were deleted or were they just lost because someone decided to use a different image altogether, thereby deleting the one with your post attached?

Nancy

P.S. I left a response for you in the middle of this thread regarding the difficulty of this challenge. I don't have all the answers you want, but maybe some of it will help.

The first one was deleted accidentally by Mark from his eligile image's thread, but the second post was deleted form my image's comments and I didn't delete the image or the post myself - I did not alter the image, all the other posts stayed there.

I noticed your response. There were some really good ideas there, thanks for replying! Allthough, I wasn't in any serious trouble myself - it was more about trying to explain why so few images had so far appeared in the challenge. I'm sure your post helped many people find ideas.
