S2- A thief magnet?

You're totally right, Gabriele. And the prejudices against
Spaniards are about the same or even worse than those against
Italians.
As a regular visitor to Spain from UK, given the choice between
Spain and Florida, I know where I would feel safer! This is a bit
old now, but worth a read.

I must have been to Spain more than 20 times, always with a camera,
and apart from a car break in in Sevilla, we have never had a
minutes trouble. Mind you, we don't go to Madrid!
Felipe, me gustan mucho los españoles.

If Gabriele's rants about his country are any indication, it sounds like Italy is the world leader in self-adoration and ego, too. =)

For what it's worth, the Indians discovered Columbus, lost at sea in 1492... That's what it said on the T-shirt at the Denver March Pow-Wow...

Roma in the 60'. I was "only" 5 years old in 1963 but I can understand. Man, you touched "la dolce vita" with your own hands!

eheh, I'm laughing and there was irony but everything I said is the truth. It is not my fault if Italy inveted or discoveried any good stuff.

Just for the sake of it I want also to remember you about the food and small other things like Ferraris and Lamborghinis (plus Maserati of course).

Do you know that 50% of the people living in USA has a friend or a relative that is Italian or are Italian themselves? It may apply to you as well ;-)

I know, I'm a crazy Italian, but I'm prout of it, I'm having such a fun life with this crazy head!

Gabriele, I'm glad that you took my comment as it was intended, as a joke. No harm was meant. I met a very nice American ex-pat who now lives in Sicily, and I hope to take him up on his offer to visit. Of course, I'll happily visit any country in the EU - I find them all interesting.

As for MVH - I'm not sure why you want me to "live up to my handle" but you're comments illustrate why people in other countries think the USA is full of violent citizens. Thanks for perpetuating the myth! =)

When photographing, i recently heard someone saying:
Oh this poor guy cannot afford a NIKON.

;-))

That's where she lost her camera, funny thing is her boyfriend was
away from her sightseeing and he lost his camera too.
They must have a curse, I never "lost" anything in 45 years 35 of them living in Italy.

Well, about the food there're a lot to talk about. Including wine, cheeses and, of course, olive oil (a lot of it is produced here in Spain, bottled there in Italy and sold as Italian all over the world).

But for what we were talking about, Spain discovered America, and that's for sure.

Best,
Dioni

America's have been discovered some 50,000 years ago as tribes went from Asia to Amarica over dry Bering Street.

After 1492 they have been robbed by the invaders coming from western Europe.

Did they take their S2 with them over the dry sea ?
Then perhaps they were stolen in 1492 by the europeans ? :-)

Evan,

don´t worry about Germany, Switzerland and Austria. As mentioned before, I think that these countries are together with Scandinavia the most safest countries in Europe.

If you travel with a rental car make sure to get your equipment out of the car. If thieves break your car the insurance covers usually only things which are attached to the car (i.e. radio). Foto equipment and luggage are not paid by the insurance.

If you travel to the Black Forest in Germany let me know I can give you a sightseeing tour in Freiburg. My phone (+49-171-8274266).

See my galeries to get some impressions from Europe:

Enjoy your travel in Europe! Maybe we will see us?

Very best wishes from Freiburg, Germany

Thomas

P.S.: I travel almost every year to Canada to visit my brother. I feel very safe in Canada and I never worried about thieves.
I have two questions really but the first relates to theft risk.

My wife & I are going to be touring Germany, Austria & Switzerland
for 3 weeks in September...(I've never been to Europe before & we
are really looking forward to this...)

I have been told that having a Biggish SLR & kit is not advisable
as I will be a target for thieves.

I would dearly love to be taking images with my S2 rather than
something less worthy of the rich subject matter but I would hate
to be in Europe without anything because I was too obvious a mark.
I sold my Nikon 5700 to get the FUji but should I consider getting
a smaller camera again & leave my S2 at home?

What do you think?

Hey Gonçalo, my dearest neighbour ;-),

Are you saying that Portugal discovered Brazil (America then)
before Spain discovered it? Ehem, ehem. That's killing history.
Heya neigbour :-) nop, not killing, its just the facts. Portugal did discovered Brazil first than Spain. Prove of this is the fact of Portugal re-signed the Treaty of Tortedesilhas ( which for people who dont know it was a treaty that divided the world in half : half for Portugal, half for Spain ). The first signed treaty, the line that divided the part of the world for Portugal was near the Brazlian tip, and the resigned the treaty a few days later, re-writing the treaty and shifting the line to Panama - just because the king got the reports from navigators that brazil was disocovered.
About Italians, the only thing they have to do with America's
discovery is that Mr. Columbus could be, and I repeat, could be
Italian (it's not fully demonstrated, even though I believe the
theory). Besides that, I know they did not have anything to do. My
reference to the language was just sarcastic.
humm.. If the man was not italian, it was what ? Well, in that time there wasnt really Italy so he wasnt really italian. Italy was a collection of "state-cities", ie, Cities so powerfull that were look as a mini-country : they had their own laws, coins, justice system, etc. and I belive the Columbus was from Genova.
Anyway, you got part of the cake and you did lose it, same as we
did. England had not done it that badly, for sure.
hum,England did not done that badly, they just came last. Happens all the time.. who gets last, reap the rewards until next time. Its simply cyclic. Well, a part from America, which I dont see a "next time" in terms of colonization, they seem pretty self-suficient now :-) eheheheh. But England never got as many riches from South and North America as Portugal and Spain did. I dont have many precise data on the Spain history but Portugal got literally thousands of tons of gold, it was impressive the amount, from Brazil and surroundings. Spain, as far I know, did much more from mexico and all.

Saludos,

Goncalo

Hey Gonçalo,

I'll have to check that fact about Portugal discovering Brazil prior to October 12th 1492, because that's something I'm not sure about.

About the gold, yes we go a lot of it. What do you think allowed us to war all over Europe to Flandes (which btw was Spanish at some point) and even Germany? The problem is that the gold was not infinite, and from being the "empire where sun never sets" we passed to be just a not very rich country :-).

Best,
Dioni
