Enjoy!

Got the X100 and it was too slow to capture this stupidity.

I only watched and skimmed a few minutes maybe half and stopped. So my comments is based on that.

The X100s that he talks about he is right. I shot that camera. It is not a AF speed demon. The X100s is like the XE-1 that way. The XT-1 is a step up AF wise for Fuji. I have not used the XT-10 so I can't talk about it.

One can not compare the DSLR to anything but a DSLR.

The closest in AF performance the Panasonic GH-3 did a nice job that way. However, when you get a dead on exposed shot, Fuji is a nicer result. I am sure the DSLR is even better with the FF sensor.

As far as street photography goes it existed with full manual cameras for a long time.

I would say if the AF is too slow switching to manual could be the solution. You can not fix out of focus so that needs to be a top priority.

Maybe the reason p&s cameras work faster and this is a guess on my part, but maybe having a self contained camera vs the need to drive the lens to AF quickly and get that to the sensor etc.. takes processing power. Maybe it is also sensor related.

I would be curious to know what sensor is in the Nikon or Canon APS-C cameras and assuming its a Sony like Fuji has if I heard correctly then it is something small that is holding Fuji off form being a DSLR replacement for say the APS-C users.

So you know right away, the title of the file:
  • Is the DSLR Dead_ Fuji X100s vs 1971 Nikon F2.mp4

+1

That did give it away.

The way he uses the Fuji is dead wrong.

Got the even slower X100 myself and can't say it is a slouch (to my 7D ok, yes it is slow). But you can ZONEFOCUS, it even has a scale to let you know what you're doing.

He can't get AF to work with OVF, that is all new to me.

This guy is a dinosaur that doesn't know to set a camera properly. Why did he get such a camera in the first place?

Gonna fetch me a Sigma DP and complain about the high iso performance...

I don't because I know it won't work for me, so I don't buy it and do not complain about it.

So then what's the point of posting this video? The Internet is full of silly things like these. If I had learned anything I'd be happy, but so it was just a waste of time - that one minute that I watched :-D

I don't have a X100 but I guarantee it focuses faster than I used to focus my manual focus lenses on my manual cameras. In those days, for street photography, I liberally used zone focus, which I suspect the X100 is fully capable of. As far as optical viewfinders versus electronic viewfinders, at a certain point they got good enough that they do not get in the way of making a photograph, and in some instances help a good deal. And I say that despite being an old fart and pretty much a luddite.

So, he compares the x100 in single shot mode with AF between each frame to a prefocused manual SLR, Not to mention he cocks the shutter like a madman on the Nikon, i wonder how much camera shake he has in hes pictures when he shoots series like that....

He obviously have no clue how to setup the x100, if you set it to continuous mode, MF and zone focus and fire off a series of 5 images, is definitely faster, since thats hes preferred method of comparing cameras.

If we are talking critical focus with shallow dof on a moving subject the AF on the x100 is probably still faster than he is able to manual focus the Nikon in such a scenario.

Not to mention the focus assist in MF mode where you basically can lock the focus on a subject with the help of AF once, and it stays there.

The internet if full of uneducated people like this, he obviously like hes old film cameras, i say let him stick to them, but this shouldn't be taken serious for someone considering to buy a x100 for street photography.

Well the X100(s)(t) are not necessarily slow, but they struggle with moving subjects (like most mirrorless), and also struggle in low light. But the x100 is so much fun and a pleasure to use, and that counts for a lot.

Plus he claimed that his old film camera was faster in cranking out shoots, but he didn't seem to know how to set and use the Fuji in continuous mode.

I like the guy, but this whole video was a set up. Makes one question either his authenticity or his honesty.

I've followed Chuck. I've taken a street photography workshop from Chuck. I've learned from Chuck. Were I to pursue the kind of "street photography" that he teaches, practices, and advocates, I would not use even my flagship X-T1. I would use my Sony a99 or my Nikon F2.

I kinda agree with him. I mean what is your "definition" of street photography? I am assuming he means low light moving targets and I haven't owned a camera yet that keeps up with my kids playing. Perhaps my A77 would if I use the correct autofocus settings and practice it. I do know that my X-E1, X-A1, X-E2 would not keep up with a moving target with indoor lighting, the x-e2 was better for sure but I wouldn't call it more then 66% reliable.

I didn't watch the whole video, but I think the point he was making is it fails for catching a crucial moment -- no surprise, we all know the Fuji is not a sports camera

I also couldn't be bothered wasting the full 12+ minutes of my diminishing lifespan dragging myself through this verbose and disjointed ad-lib (ever heard of a script?), but one pertinent thing did stand out even so - the X100s beats the F2 Nikon hands down in AF. ;-)

Posted a shot I took with 100s.. He dismissed it saying let's see sports.
