Panasonic GM1: transfer of one RAW-file over WiFi takes 5 minutes!

I've tried the direct upload function in my new GM1 and the WiFi speed is ridiculously slow. One RAW file (about 19MB) takes up to 5 minutes to transfer. That's only 60kybtes/s, wtf?? My router shows a connection speed of around 50MBit/s, which would allow a couple of MB/s and a transfer time of under 10 seconds. SD-Card is also fast enough.

Please tell me I can improve those awful times a lot.

Also, how about transferring RAW directly to an iPad with Lightroom, is that even supported?

Apart from that (and the missing USB charging) I love this tiny, tiny camera!

Thanks

Sebastian

I've not tried RAW files but JPEGs at 6-7MB take around 10 sec each on my GM1. The camera says that the transfer will take x minutes for a bunch but it is always much much quicker than this estimate

I assume you are talking about transfer directly to the LUMIX a Club. The upload speed of normal broadband is usually 10% of the download speed. If so, then 5Mbps upload speed. A 20MB RAW file, is 160mb. Ignoring any overheads and error correction, the file should transfer in 32 seconds. This assumes that there are no other constraints in the end to end components. In reality, there will be constraints. So, I'd expect circa a of minute.

I've never used my iPad to upload from home, only via hotel wifi, which usually very slow. So, when travelling I use Photogene on the iPad because it can resize files by lower quality JPEG compression or the pixel dimensions, or both.

As far as I can tell, WiFi on any of these cameras (GM1 is only one of them) is only good for controlling the camera.

Anything else - and that includes transferring substantial amounts of data - is just a side effect of there being some kind of connection.

Use USB OTG or get yourself an sdcard reader for your device.

That does seem very slow then. I always use a USB card reader to transfer to the PC, I'm often transferring several hundred images, albeit JPEG, and that can take several minutes but for gigabytes I think that's OK. When travelling and transferring to the iPad, I do use the Panasonic image app and wifi to transfer selected images, maybe 20 at a time, and that might take a minute or two.

This could be simply a positioning and signal issue. This past weekend I was moving some data around on my network and found that my laptop which was sitting on a side table directly beside the router would only get about 800-900KiB/s but when I picked it up to move it then it would suddenly spike to just over 5MiB/s even though I only moved it a few more feet away. I'd give it a try from a couple of different locations, especially if you had the camera positioned really close or really far from the router, or there are any obstructions near or around each device (like putting it on the desk between two other devices.

Remember that most antenna on routers are designed to put the signal out laterally from the device and not vertically as much. For instance if you have your router on a shelf and put the camera directly above it on top of the desk the signal might actually be terrible there even though it's close to the router.

Maybe I'm way off on how your setup is, but a huge amount of wifi issues are fixed with simple positioning and removing obstruction.

Nope, Im talking about the direct upload function to my PC over my local WiFi.
Hi Rincewind79

I realize this is a very old thread, but do you remember how you've used this functionality? I've been desperately trying to get a raw file out of my GM5 over WiFi, and I just cannot get a direct connection to work.

The standard Panasonic "image app" only allows you to transfer JPEGs, so I'm looking for alternatives.
