I recently purchased the Sony A7s and a Sony 28-70mm, but when I put on the lens, it won't autofocus, there's no f-stop reading and I get the message "Invalid because lens not attached. Attach lens correctly." It gives the same message for my manual lenses. I've Enabled Released w/o Lens, tried cleaning the contact points, gave it a firmware update and went through the manual to see what else it could be. ANY IDEAS? Much appreciated!

For the 28-70, it sounds like contact problem between the camera and the lens. Can you see if any of the contacts are damaged. I assume that the lens is fully locked into position.

Try resetting all parameters to the factory settings and remove and put back a fully charged battery.

I can't understand why you get the same message with a third party MF lens if you have enabled "Release w/o lens". (I assume this lens is on a dumb adapter and is not a Canon on a Smart Adapter).

Just an idea. Some lenses have protective tape over the electronic contacts. Not sure about FE 28-70, but did you check that the lens contacts are clear?

I checked the contacts again and it doesn't look damaged at all. Lens fully locked. I forgot to add that whenever I turn on the camera with the 28-70 mm, it makes a clicking sound. I did a factory reset and put in a full battery, but no luck. The lenses are Rokinon e-mount lenses.

The lens contacts look clear. I've been examining them but I don't see anything to suggest anything is wrong.

I had a older lens and camera and a friend let me borrow one of his new bodies and one lens would not work on his new camera body. All I got was a click and nothing would happen. Then I remember these things are just portable computers. I took out a microfiber cloth and rubbed the contacts on the lens and the body and it just worked fine after that. So give it a try you have nothing to lose at this time except about 15 sec's in wiping off the contacts.

It was not a Sony but that should not matter, I finally checked and his newer body had a extra contact that my older camera did not have so nothing ever rubbed on the same contact on the lens. I could not see anything but after cleaning the contacts everything worked fine.

I love the 2.8 GM version of this lens on my work Sony a7sii.

I had a similar problem today while walking around.

I have only one lens, a Sony 2.8 24-70 GM, so it never leaves the camera. My camera stopped recognizing the lens as I was walking around using it. I could not manually change the aperture, shutter speed, or several other menu settings.

I tried switching in and out of manual, powering on and off, removing and reseating the lens, letting it cool down, removing the SD card, removing the battery (powered off).

What finally FIXED it was to power on the camera, remove the battery (with the camera powered on), wait 20 sec. and put the battery back in with the camera still powered on. Now it's working again.

I hope this helps.

Oh how was hopeful this would work for me in 2025!! Same exact issue.
