DavidP - found something you don't have yet

I'd be real curious to know what this guy is doing...the rig seems to be pretty specific to some purpose, like shooting model airplanes, or maybe baton twirlers.

Looks like the Sony DCR-VX2000, the Mini-DV consumer version of the DSR-PD150 DVCam. Strange stabilisation system, never seen anything of the sort.

Were those explosions from crashes? Any deaths?

New technology does not obsolete old technology.
Dropping your camera obsoletes it.

They simulated bombing and strafing while flying vintage war planes over the field.

Looks to me it's a counter-balanced rig for shooting subjects moving rapidly and in three dimensions. Might even be a stabilizer in there.

That's how they get those smooth shots of planes maneuvering -- the headphones are hooked to people telling him what to expect and the rig lets him move it quickly and smoothly.

Also means nobody gonna get in his way;)

Yes, it is a Sony VX-2000. He also is using a teleconverter. That's definitely the strangest stabilization system I've ever seen. I suspect it is designed to make the camera weightless and allow it to stay in whatever vertical position required with minimal arm effort. Quite ingenious. Although it's got to be tough getting out of that for restroom breaks. :-)
