Hi Max, your first pic is of the Entrance hall, Rotorua Museum (formerly The Bath House), Oruawhata Drive, Government Gardens, Rotorua. Your second is of the Rotorua First World War memorial, on-site. Your other pics are on-site architectural decorations.

My reference to ‘taking the cure’ refers to its' original use: http://www.rotoruamuseum.co.nz/exhibitions/details/taking-the-cure/

Regards,

PC
Yes, it’s been a museum for 46 years now Pat. The Blue Baths bath house where you might go for a cure is a separate building nearby. http://www.bluebaths.co.nz/bluebaths.php

Well done Pat, and over to you.

A little over 200 years ago, an Ambassador (and future President) of the USA visited here and commented on the beauty of the town and its surroundings.

Auray? Ben Franklin, definitely! (I hope!!!)

Hi Albert,

Good guess, but not correct. Ben Franklin was sent to France as Minister/Ambassador of the USA and he arrived at the port of Saint-Goustan, Auray in 1776. In 1785 he was elected President of Pennsylvania (roughly equivalent to Governor nowadays) but he was never President of the USA.

Regards, Pat.

Probably Jefferson (1784–89 in France), but he travelled a lot (about 40 towns).

See the map of his wine tours: https://drinkwhatyoulike.wordpress.com/2010/09/14/30-days-of-thomas-jefferson-on-wine-–-day-14/

Hi Hans,

Another good guess! Jefferson ‘ticks’ both boxes -Minister/Ambassador and President- but still not correct. I’ll post more clues in a while...

Regards, Pat.

The future US President in question was John Quincy Adams. At the time of his visit here, he was Minister/Ambassador of the US in Berlin – which was not at that time the capital of the (future) Germany.

When Adams visited, the town in question was in Prussia. It is now part of the nation it belonged to in earlier centuries.

[For my next clues I'll move away from former US Ambassadors and Presidents and say some things about the church and/or the town!]

You seem to refer to:

Letters on Silesia, written during a tour through that country in the years 1800, 1801 by John Quincy Adams. London 1804

We know, thanks to Hans, that we are in Silesia.

This church contains an organ from the 1700s by the famous organ building family named Casparini (also rendered as Caspar/Caspari/Gasparini)

Somewhat unusually, it was for some time used simultaneously by both the Roman Catholic and Protestant parishes in the town.

Final clues and another photo, if needed, in the morning....
