What i have is Sony A57

I asked Sony help and this is what i got

"""""I understand that you would like to print a picture on a 8/10 paper without cropping it.

I understand that you would like to know what settings the camera has to be set, in order to print a picture on an 8/10 paper without it being cropped. I can see how important this is for you.

The camera only has three image size settings. L for prints up to A3+ size, M for prints up to A4 size and S for For prints up to L/2L size.""""""""

This doesn't tell me which to use to allow me to print to 8X10 without any cropping or at the very least not much of it.

Hi I'm new here but hope to help

your camera when shooting large jpg outputs at 4912 x 3264 pixels

that means if printing at 300 dpi the image would be 16.4 inches by 10 inches roughly

so you can see you have plenty of 'pixels' to print bigger than 8 x 10 inch

the problem is the sensor in the camera and the photos it produces are a different aspect ratio

so you are always going to end up with an image that is closer to a square that what your camera produces

I suggest shooting in jpg large or RAW if you want to edit later and when framing images in camera just bear in mind that when printing to 8x10 you will lose 2 strips of each end of the display or viewfinder

I would let printer 'resize' them as the printer software is usually very good at this

Hope this helps

Regards

Dean

The A57 shoots in a 3:2 aspect ratio. You can produce an 8X12 from this without cropping but not an 8X10; they're just not the same shape.

Your options are:

go to 8X12 print size

crop the edges

print undersize (6.67X10) and leave borders on the top and bottom

distort the image so it has a 3:2 ratio

Of these options, I find cropping the edges to be the best.

Quite correct. BUT, the only really good approach is to FIRST understand what Leonard said [that you can't do what you are wanting; ie print a 3:2 image in a 5:4 space] and then plan ahead. You need to leave the edges that will be cropped off devoid of important parts of your image!

The above is difficult to do. Some cameras have more aspect modes, including 5:4 [I think some also have guide-lines that show where a 5:4 aspect ratio image will fit].

An 8x10 has an aspect ratio of 4:5, your Sony only has the choice of 2:3 (like a 4x6 print) or 16:9 (wide screen TV). If you can't crop then you have to letterbox the photo.

For example, for this 3:2 aspect ratio original:

3:2 aspect ratio original image
3:2 aspect ratio original image

Use your photo editing software to add bars top and bottom:

Black bars added top and bottom to create 4:5 aspect ratio image. Of course the bars could be white, blue, patterns or anything you want.

At one time or another all experienced photographers have learned to leave a little extra space around the subject matter to allow for cropping to the myriad aspect ratios available for printing.

If the Sony tech support says "I can see how important this is for you," you're likely talking to a drone. Then the drone doesn't actually answer the question because it's too busy trying to be "polite" instead of giving a direct answer.

A direct answer to the question is to say that you need a camera that provides an option to change the aspect ratio of its JPEG output files to 5:4, or you need to crop the raw image with software. The next question that should be asked is why you need this option. It's useful when you need many immediate JPEG files in the 5:4 aspect ratio, and also for viewing the cropped image on your camera's preview screen. Otherwise, it's better to keep the raw file in the native 3:2 aspect ratio and crop it with software.

There should be a better and different word for what you are describing. "Drone" has been captured by the media for their evil purposes. :-( Perhaps "robot"?

I think what you are describing is "not communicating w/ a human" although some humans act very much like "drones". If the OP was unaware that he was communicating with a software program, then the Turing Test has successfully passed muster. ;-)

Thanks to all the posts guys/gals. Looks like I just need to work around it and use the raw images . (pretty sure the setting is always set to L anyway)

but thank you

but thank you
RAW images will not help an aspect ratio error.
