Am I crazy? going to be unemployed

A lot of us, even pros, suffer this problem. If your not going to make money with it don't buy it. If you need that focal length get f4L version. good luck in finding another job. david
HI

I think this is crazy, but I am just curious if anyone is as crazy
as I am. You know, in a week, I am going to be unemployed, and I
am thinking of getting a 70-200 IS L. There is a lot of BS reasons
that I am convincing myself to get the lens. It is a good portrait
lens, it takes sharp pictures, etc. The bottomline is I AM NOT A
PRO, and I AM GOING TO BE UNEMPLOYED SOON. Am I a shoppingholic?

Take some time out to get your head on.

I can tell you, never let life get you down, you never know what is around the corner.

I know in my own life things have happened which were totally unexpectant that i had not figured on.

Still life goes on and I am surprised at how things can go from bad to worse and then make a turnaround.

Just keep your foot in the door and never give up, be persistent in your endeavours without expecting any results and eventual things will happen.
You should have a long term plan, as it may take you longer to find
your next job. If you have plenty stashed away and don't mind
selling something other than the lens first if have to, I don't
think you are crazy...

Yes, this is speaking from experience. ;)

Seriously, you've got to figure out your economic situation. Frankly, mine doesn't allow me to buy such an expensive lens even with a pretty secure job. On the other hand, I justified the upgrade to the 10D, and the grip, and 28-135is, and 550ex flash, because I work hard at my job and think I am entitled to some of the fruits of my labor in the form of toys I appreciate.

The job market is tough, and it might take you a little while to find a new job. If you can fill some of that time with enjoying a new lense, and if the lens isn't too great a percentage of your savings that you will need to live on in the meantime, go for it. I have found that during emotionally down times for me, it helps to have something external to enjoy like a new camera, lens, etc.

I would guess that a lot of us here can't really justify the need for an L lens, since we're not pros. Nonetheless, a lot of us want L lenses, and some of us even get them. I personally justify my expenditures because I drive a car worth less than $1,000. I watch my co-workers with newer fancy cars, and I think that I made the right decision for me, owning a camera setup worth several times more than my car. Hopefully, someday I'll own a lens worth 2 or 3 times my car. :)

Good luck with the job search. I've done a job of interviewing of others recently, and I think one really important quality is self confidence. If the lens will make you happy and increase your self confidence, think of it as an investment into your job search also.

Good luck,
Dan

Actually, if you feel the need to spend money, you should probably go see a therapist. Are you really this thick, or do you really need help? Let's see, buy a lens that costs $1600, or pay bills/rent/mortgage and eat.

Actually, go ahead and buy it, it WILL make you feel better. Because if you are stupid enough to buy a lens with pending unemployment, than you will stupid enough to sell it to me in a couple of months for let's say $1.

Jet,

I have you fooled. I am scared and feeling very alone at this moment. And if I were rich, I would not have agonized over a Quantaray 19-35 lens this last week.

If I were staring unemployment in the eyes I would not buy a lens, no matter the price. You can always buy it later IF you still want it.

Take care,
It seems like everyone in this forum is happy and relatively rich.
I am just very confused and lost and do not know what to do. Is
there a forum where I can get advice on graduate studies and
dealing with unemployment. I feel worried, do not know where to
go. Sorry I know this is a photography forum but it seems like
everyone in this forum is happy and has a great family, posting
pictures of their children.

You need serious help, jet. Nothing to do with photography, lenses or employment. You post this on a forum of people whom you don't even know. Stop being a baby, buy the damm lens, get another job and show us some photos. It really is that simple.

Check around. Some churches have networking groups to help people find employment. Check with your local library. They might know of some place to help. Good luck. No, I'd postpone the purchase.

Instead of a lens, go lie on a beach for a week or two. You'll come back ready for that job hunt. That's what I do between jobs. (Only if you've saved up a few month's of living expenses, of course).

But then so am I. I may be in the same boat soon, but can not stop myself from buying lenses. So I am buying primes instead.

I'm looking at a similar bleak future. I don't have any idea what your financial situation really is, but my quick sojourn into amateur pyschology suggests that you are asking for help. The sane answer is, no, do not lay out big money on a "feel good" item. Instead, use it as an incentive for constructive progress. For example, you CAN'T get that nice new lens until you've successfully landed a new secure job. THEN you can reward yourself with the purchase of this beautiful lens. That way instead of it being forever seen as a sinful indiscretion, it will be perceived as a just reward. Just my $0.02, and you get what you pay for ;-)

Jet,

Try community service or volunteering. It will keep your mind off purchasing equipment, you'll make new friends, find new opportunities, and save lots of money. Been there before.

Jet,

Sorry about your situation. I knows how it feels, I was let go after 16 years a few weeks ago. Actually while I did not like being unemployed, my job was even worse. The company is going under, I have survived around 15 to 16 reductions over the last 7 years. The last year was total just a waste of my time. I did a lot a praying and soul searching and was actually happy to be let go. Now I am working with a friend, very little money but good potential. I am acutally working for an equity stake in a new venture. My severance made this possible.

Back to your real question, I thin you need to judge your finacial position. I just bought a Sigma 15-30, but paid for it by selling my Minolta D7i. I also plan on buying another lens, but will pay for that by selling my EOS 3. The EOS 3 was my biggest mistake purchase ever, love the camera, but I should have spent the money on better glass. I doubt I have used it 10 times in 2 years.

Judge you prospects and your money situation. If you can afford it, buy the lens I hear it is really nice. But judge wisely, you can't eat a lens, well you can but it is rather crunchy.

... is reziproc related to the number of lenses you already own. If you already have a couple of good lenses you can easily sell one or another if you need the money.

If not, I wouldn't buy the lens and go for something less expensive and wait until times are getting better for you.

Glad that I could help. If in the future I find myself on the open market (a good possibility) I hope that I am as fortunate as you. And I hope I will see it as an opportunity; I'm not satisfied with my current job, but it pays well.

Networking is the answer. Where do you live, what do you do, and what are your strengths? (We know your weakness is buying lenses!) It is likely that someone on this forum has a connection that could help you.

So refrain, go take some good pictures with the equipment you have,
and find another job. Then reward yourself with the lens.

Good luck.

My pictures may only be worth 500 words, but I'm taking a Photographic English Composition course.

Grateful for any constructive criticism regarding my photos, composition, lighting, technique, etc.

Since you say you are not a pro photographer, you don't NEED the lens. What you do NEED is the money that you would have to buy the lens.

It's really that simple no matter how many rich people may be on here.

Priorities, particularly at your age and situation in life are best centered around what your NEEDS are, not necessarily what you desire.

Just my thoughts based on my personal experience, as well as having an occupation where I see people living on the streets everyday.

Sorry man, but if you think it's crazy too, then we're both right.

in a week, I am going to be unemployed, and I
am thinking of getting a 70-200 IS L.
One question for you........ What exactly ARE you thinking?

Here's a better idea, go buy a 1Ds, and every L lens available. Then when you're bankrupt, at least you have LOTS of good toys to play with.
There is a lot of BS reasons that I am convincing myself to get the lens. > It is a good portrait lens, it takes sharp pictures, etc.
I still haven't heard a reason for you to make a purchase right now.
The bottomline is I AM NOT A PRO, and I AM GOING TO BE > UNEMPLOYED SOON. Am I a shoppingholic?
If that last statement doesn't scare you into not buying this lens now, nothing will.

I can't believe there was this much activity on this thread. I fell for you, but come on.......it's just a hobby for you, it's not your life. Why take chances on your life because of it? This is just crazy.
