How can I control the exposure / aperture while recording movies? I was using it to video this weekend and the movies are very dark. I was unable to have any control over the settings, however I shoot in manual. Thanks

What camera are you shooting with?

Assuming you used the E-M1, the simplest and sure way to get acceptable video is to set the camera to Video on the mode dial. If you want more control, use manual, set the shutter speed to 160, set the aperture as desired, dial in the correct exposure by exposure compensation or ISO settings. In super bright lighting conditions you may have to result to a ND filter.

The under exposed video can easily be corrected in Photo Shop.

That is the problem, I have it set in manual (e-m1) yet when I try to adjust anything there is no change.

If you say Manual, do you have it set to M, or to Movie Symbol? Set at the Movie Symbol, you can't make any changes, the camera sets all the parameters. Set at M will allow you to set A and S.

I have got decent results shooting with my E-M1 on auto movie mode. Ideally though I set to shutter priority, use ISO as appropriate, such as 200 for outside, 400 for inside and upwards if you have to. Set the shutter to twice your frame rate, so on an E-M1 it will be 1/60 and then the camera will select aperture for you, and you can adjust up and down to suit with the EV dial.

Or do it manually and use the meter display.

Thanks for the advice. Have you also noticed the sensor wobbles? If I pan too fast I get a wobble effect int he movie.

If I have to watch a home movie where there are fast pans, not the best practice to take videos, I get a headache. A "wobble" is the least of a problem.

Yaeh, thats the famous rolling shutter "jello" effect that you get when using mILC cameras for video. A dedicated vid camera will not do this.

However, fast pans are best avoided in all situations.

Because they are annoying.
