Could we be looking at a complete tour-de-force with the new GH5, the GX8 sensor must be big to accommodate 22mp? Is there 16mp+ 24p video @ 5120x3200 coming too

The new sensor is 21.77mp so not sure Multi-aspect fits completely as per GH2, but the sensor is bigger than normal presumably around 5570x3910 aprox or 18.6 x 13.1

or 5400 x 3666 aprox in 3:2, 19mp is possible maybe?

and 5500 x 3100 aprox in 16:9 17mp is possible too?

I think they needed the bigger sensor and new pixel count for new 4K options was essential

My sources tell me that the GX12 will feature two 20 mp sensors 'sewn together' for the first full-frame M86 camera. On the video end, 16K video with Dolby Surround audio. Top this off with the soon to be released Panasonic 9-800mm F1.2 lens(constant). Street price of $17,000. Year of release 2017.

m86 is four sensors 'sewn together'.

Do you mean m83 or m46?

for 16k you need 133mp.

I sell my car already for that lens.

That's good, because that means you can park the lens in the garage when you're not using it.

Where did you get the information from indicating that the sensor is a little bigger than traditional 4/3 size and it's 22MP?

DP Review and Pana Japan, both state actual pixels as 22MP(21.77) if the sensor pitch is 3.35 then is has to be 18.5mm wide and support extended 3:2 and 16:9/10 ratios if they decide to implement. That is a lot of extra pixels, usually its only 20.3 or so.

Pana had to move to 20mp min sensor to support new 5K monitors from apple and dell ;) 5120x2880 etc, which is where I think the GH5 (5k) will be heading

I so wish you are right!

GH2, a true multi-aspect camera has a 18MP sensor giving 16MP aspect ratio.

So, perhaps a 21.77 MP camera can do multi-aspect 20MP shots.

My GH2 gets visibly wider in 19:6 mode compared to 4:3. Visibly wider.

So I would love to see GH5 doing multiaspects.

GX7 next to GX8 with sensors visible

And here is GH2 with a multi-aspect sensor

…and dementia might not have set in so I might still be too smart to buy it! LOL.

Nice one, Joe! ROFL

From the Panasonic press release introducing the GX8

Sensor

Max Resolution 5184x3888

Effective Pixels 20Mpx

Sensor Photo Detectors 22mpx

Until this thread raised the issue, I never questioned the number of MXP that was published by camera makers. The maximum resolution of 5,184 multiplied by 3,888 equals 20,155,000. Panasonic calls it 20mpx. I have no idea how Sony calculates their maximum resolution of their sensors. Other than performing these simple computations, I have no expertise or special knowledge in determining the number of MPX in a sensor.

I am interested in the GX8 due to the sensor's higher resolution (provided there is no low light shooting penalty), the larger VF, fully articulating LCD, larger buffer, improved stabilization, etc. The introductory price is a bit steep, but that should moderate in time. If another camera does not catch my eye, it is likely that a GX8 will be in my future.
