RUMOR: 2 new lenses coming from Panasonic

I don't care where they're built but a quality 17mm f/2 might just stop me from pulling the trigger on an x100t. Bonus points if they give it an aperture ring and an accurate distance scale for zone-focussing.

For me only if it's 17,5/1.4 Leica - most desirable fast prime in Panasonic lens line.
Possibly even F/1.2. There's a lot of room for fast lenses still. Also a good AF prime wider than 12mm, or a higher quality xx-300mm zoom...

EDIT: With our luck it will be two repainted versions of their least popular lenses... :-|

There's a good chance that one of the new lenses is something like a 100-300mm f4.

And this lens has something important for future development of other lenses:

"As you can imagine, I can’t relate specific details about what might be coming. But I can say that Lumix does have a lens in development that’s nearly ready to go. It will be a huge leap forward and something I’m extremely excited about and I’m confident others will feel the same. Equally important as the knowledge of this new lens was our discussions regarding ideas for future optics."

Well done Daniel! It is great that you have been able to build a relationship with Panasonic. Hopefully we will see some more details on a telephoto lens by the end of this year.

Steve, I think you will be quite happy with an eventual announcement, sooner rather than later. Hang in there."

In my opinion Panasonic need a replacement for the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 (slow AF) and Panasonic Leica 25mm f1.4 (completely different style).

They can do the same as they did with the 42.5mm lenses:

- Panasonic 25mm f1.2 (best optics like the 42.45mm f1.2, very expensive)

- Panasonic 25mm f1.7 (affordable but very good optics like the Panasonic 42.5mm f1.7)

They need also something wider then the 15mm f1.7.

Something like a 10mm f1.7?

A 100-300mm with a new diaphragm that fixes the high speed AF problem would be nice but based on past experience with Panasonic it is more likely to be simply a cosmetic "upgrade".

You mean most popular lenses surely. On this forum people are dreaming for really unpopular lenses only.

It is supposed to be a 100-400

I really would not complain if one of those lenses would be a 12-50mm (or 60) f/2.8-4.0 zoom that's lighter and smaller than the constant f/2.8 ones. That would probably make a nice kit lens for GX8. But I'm not holding my breath.

This gets really interesting since the rumor just says "two more lenses are coming, stay tuned to find out what they will be." So now we can speculate.

The question now becomes "where are the gaps?" Which lenses that might be sold in sufficient numbers to generate a profit can be needed next? Where is the commercial potential in a lens catalog that already has over 100 lenses, including some very obvious redundancy in it?

Sure, everyone would love a 12mm f/0.95 lens, but what are the odds we could afford one, and how big and heavy would it be? And how many would actually be sold?

My own personal favorites might be:
  • a 9-18mm lens with a constant f/2.8
  • a 100mm f/2.8 macro lens
  • a 150mm f/2.8
  • a 500mm d/5.6 weather sealed lens for birders
  • a T/S lens designed for M4/3?
Now, I realize these would be frightfully expensive lenses, but what else is left to do?

Do we really need more kit lenses or more compact folding lenses or more adaptations of existing lenses that simply add OIS or are 0.1 of an f/stop faster?

If you stop and think about it, this is a nice problem to have. "Too many great lenses already," so now you have to venture off the well beaten path.
