What is the DSLR look?

The main difference between DSLR and mirrorless is the mirror. That has two consequeces:

First of all: the mirror turns all objects on the right side to the left and vice versa. If you want to photograph text I would recomend to go mirrorless.

The second aspect causes the mirrorless look. Once we where camping for a few days and had no mirror at all. In theese days my wife had a special mirrorless look. Makeup was bad and her hair was not proper styled.

And this is why the FF DSLRs are going to go the way of the dinosaur - they'll die under the their own bulk and weight ...:-D .. if their owners don't go first of course!

now this just makes M43 users sound like limp wrist pansies or just too fat to be able to lift more than the weight of a big mac

you can see the bloke above is dedicated to capturing his chosen subject .

but if you wanted to capture a sneaky shot of your kid snacking on the contents of his left nostril or go for some saucy snaps of wifey while getting up to bedroom antics then a M43 would be more suitable than the above set up i agree .
Dedicated - yup.

Is he gonna have physical problems in neck, shoulders, back - yup.

A bulked up body, bit grip and a hump on top with an evf in it maquerading as a mirror based ovf. One might hardly tell them from a genuine dslr except that they are slightly smaller .... ;)

The GX7 actually does have shadows/highhighlights adjustment settings that can customized.

You are right in saying that it's the soft highlight which I am after.

It looks Heavenly, and happy, which is perfect IMO in capturing people.

Thanks again for the great advices!

All the best!

The look you get from a jobsworth when he sees that gargantuan lump of obsolete electromechanical technology hanging around your neck and says 'sorry sir but I can't let you in with that sort of camera'.
I have heard some people wanting this image look from the DSLR and wanted to know what it is and how can I achieve it with an m43 gear.

Is it DR? DOF? Or something else?

An example image would be useful.

Many thanks!

I have asked multiple times from people what they mean when they say "DSLR look" and it has always related only to blurry background "so stuff doesn't show up there". So it is the narrow depth of field.

Most people admire photos like (random internet photo) on right:

depth-of-field-comparison-400.jpg

Why? Because their pocket cameras and their smartphones doesn't capture that same look like on right, but they get the look on left.

And while most photographers don't know how to control the background, lighting, guide the model/subject etc and then same time time the shutter release, it comes to "DSLR look" as narrow depth of field helps them to have little control (by trial and error, luck etc) for background as it gets blurred away from revealing their incapability to get it correctly done.

But, it is as well about contrast, colors and clarity. Everything that can be done in post process to make the image look "supernatural".

Just by alone controlling background and lighting and timing the moments, almost any camera can give that "DSLR look".

A DSLR is to most people just anything else than pocket camera or smartphone.

I agree with your assessment.

For someone who is used to FF shooting with a 70-210mm F2.8 lens, it's not readily producible on the m43 world.

You would need a 35-150mm F1.4 to get the equivalency!!! No such lens exist from my search.

It's also hard to please all viewers. I once blurred the background and the person ask me "Why is my picture so blurry?" I literally speechless try to find the words. :)

Best

That's reason why I love 4/3 format because I can get the both worlds.

1) I get as blurry background I/customer wants, that not even a 35mm sensor is capable.

2) I get subject in focus with subject in focus with higher quality than 35mm sensor is capable.

The 2 stops higher light gathering capability 4/3 format has over 35mm is a huge benefit and I take it over any 35mm sensor any day.
