I am a total newbie at digital photography. I am reading about EXIF data.

Question: If I post a picture to one of the DPREVIEW forums does the EXIF data go automatically along with the photo? I have learned a lot from reviewing the EXIF data of others.

Thanks for your help.

I'm definitely not the expert on this, but it should if you upload the photo directly from your computer. If you are copying the photo from a web site (or providing a link to a pic on a web site) then it will typically make the trip OK; however, there are circumstances under which it may not.

The reason I am hedging is that for a while, EXIF data from photos in Picasa web albums didn't seem to be displayed. I don't know what the issue was, or if it has since been resolved. If Picasa had problems, it is conceivable other web photo sites might as well.

Perhaps the simplest thing to do is to upload a pic from wherever you have it stored into a new post, title the subject line "Test Post To See If Photo's EXIF Is Displayed", and then hit the "Post" button and see what happens.

Like I said, I'm not the expert so if someone has a more definitive answer, it won't hurt my feelings at all if you chime in.

This website retains Exif data, unless you remove it while editing your images on your computer.

Or if you post via the Web using a site like Photobucket, which seems to strip EXIF.

I'm too lazy to change to another photo host so any time I think the EXIF will be important ('What the hell?...' questions :-) ) I post dirct from myPC or try to remember to use my DPR gallery.
