Sigma lenses and Nikon d7200 incompatibility

... Why bother with Sigma. Tamrons need no firmware updates.
Most Tamrons won't work on the Nikon 1 cameras and Tamron won't offer any help. At least Sigma tries to help. They offer firmware upgrades whenever possible and even do it at no charge in some cases.

Tamron makes some nice lenses but their after purchase support sucks.

Oh, and as for the Tamrons not needing firmware upgrades. Tell that to the Nikon and Canon users that bought the 150-600 Tamron.

I bought the Sigma 24-105 about 3 mos. ago. Sorry, I misread your post about live view focusing with Sigmas.

Well, Sigma did infringe on Nikon's VR patents. There's bad blood between the two.
Nikon probably intentionally made changes to screw with Sigma.

Sigma, Tokina and Tamron always infringe on something. Sigma been taking away sales from Canon, Nikon, Minolta (Sony) for over 30 years as the leading third party lens manufacturer. Not to mention that some stupid people buy Sigma cameras too. :-)
Hey! I resemble that!
If you did not admit it no one would know. :-D

Does it focus in live view?
I haven't tried it in live view. It's not something I would normally do for quick moving subjects. I used the D7200 with a Sigma 150-600 S to shoot surfers on very large waves at the Wedge in Newport Beach last Monday and it worked great even in really dim, flat lighting. Again, I don't know about live view.
All my Sigma lenses that came out before D810 do not focus in LV. The only two lenses that focus in LV are 120-300mm Sport and 35mm F1.4
My 120-300mm pre-Sport focuses in Live View on my D800E and my D7200 post a Sigma service center firmware update, and my 35mm Art works on all the Nikon bodies I own with no need for a firmware fix. It would be nice if Sigma provided a list of Nikon bodies, compatibility with their lenses as originally released, and their policy on firmware fixes for pre-dock lenses.

Simple.

A far as I know.

All lenses designed (announced) after 2010 for sure can be updated by firmware.

Since I don't have all of the Sigma lenses (I tried but my wife would not let me :-D) maybe some some lenses predating 2010 can be upgraded by firmware.

Older lenses (old crinkled finish) would have to be re-chipped if not too old but I don't know which ones.

Nice, can you post a few of the Wedge photos?

I sold both My Sigma long zooms when I bought the D810, (guess I got Lucky) But now my Tamron seems to be broken, I'll need to dig out My 15 year old Nikon 300mm 2.8 and 14tc.

... So, non-crinkled lenses that were designed, but not announced before 2010, might require a firmware upgrade or might need a rechipping.
Probably All models sold before D810 came out. Even lenses like newest 180mm F2.8 macro needs one unless you bought it new recently. As far as I know all lenses bought after D810 are already re-chipped or firmware updated. But better call Sigma to find out.

Personally at this point I would only buy Global Vision lenses or wait for 3 more years. I was told 2 years ago that Sigma has a plan to have all their lenses Global Vision. I have hard time believing it though.

UPDATE:

I broke down and bought the Sigma USB dock and upgraded the firmware on the 17-70mm C and it fixed all problems and now the lens works better than it did new.

Unfortunately, I'll have to send in my non SVG lenses back to Sigma for flashing. I guess that's the Sigma tax we pay.

I'll tell it to the world :)
As long as you don't say that you bought SD1 for $10K you will be OK :-D

That 10k Sigma was a tactical marketing decision. Until that announcement virtually no one knew Sigma even made cameras. Now it is just virtually no one cares they make cameras. 😉

As frustrating as the lens forward compatibilty issue can be, I have found Sigma service to be very efficient. My 85 non dock lens is now very nice on the D810.

Everyone knew they made cameras before SD1 and after that fiasco with pricing but no one cared back then and now for a simple few facts that if you buy in to their system no matter how good it is they don't develop new technology as often like Canon, Nikon and Sony and you are stuck with Sigma lenses only. And they still don't have FF camera which majority of people crave.

Yes, I have to send a bunch of lenses including 85mm to them. But the only problem is the LV not working but everything else works just fine. And I hardly use LV. But I should do it anyway if I want to sell these lenses in the future.

Sigma is going to have some headaches on it's hands with the D7200. Nikon probably intentionally made changes to screw with Sigma.

Sigma 8-16mm DG - Live view won’t focus - Live view (2-5 shots, locks flash)
I can confirm that where my 8-16 has no problem with Live view AF on my D7200, it doesn't AF in live view on the D7200. It does detect focus and if you manually turn the focus ring to focus, it will take a picture in live view in focus priority. So if you're willing to manually focus the camera will confirm it is in focus for you. Anyway it's a workaround. Your only other options are to switch the lens to MF or shoot through the viewfinder. Definitely disappointing but at least the lens is somewhat usable.

I don't know what you mean by locks flash after 2-5 shots. I was able to put down and pop up the flash repeatedly and exposure seemed okay after 5 or 6 shots.

CEOpx, did you get a response from Sigma?

I have been in contact with support for Sigma in Australia which is C.R.Kennedy & Company Pty Ltd. What a surprise I've been given conflicting information on whether it would cost money to have firmware updated. By email I was told it would not. On the phone however I was told it would only be free if under warranty and would "probably" cost under $100 if not and $27.50 to evaluate if I didn't go ahead. I find the modern instance of not quoting even ballpark figures disturbing. I don't like writing blank cheques. I was polite because there is no point being rude to staff who don't make the decisions, but what i felt like saying is that I "probably" won't buy your lenses anymore.

I got this lens second hand quite cheaply by low-balling on Ebay "or make an offer". It it is certainly out of the warranty period plus I'm unsure if it is a grey market lens, which they changed their policy to not cover in Australia at some stage:

I can drop it in to Sydney but if I do it will be sent to Melbourne as apparently there is only one actual service center in the country. The lady I spoke to was polite but told me that I couldn't expect them to have the expensive to repair lenses in more than one state.

Furthermore I'm not confident that anyone I spoke to has looked into whether or not this particular model of lens can have firmware changed or be re-chipped.

The bottom line is that as far as I am concerned getting the lens assessed is a $50+ excercise by the time I factor in shipping or driving across town to drop it off. And it is a pure risk - the lens may or may not be fixable and it may or may not be economical to do so.

Such a shame. It really is quite a nice lens. I can live with this only because I don't have much use for live view and wide angle in what I shoot. The bigger shame is that I will now have to consider Sigma lenses unserviceable. Tamron's not much better from experience (Tamron 90Sp with focus issues at middle distance), and I've had nothing but trouble getting bodies serviced at Nikon (and their repairs are uneconomical on consumer lenses as I learnt when the AF on my original 70-300VR packed it in) .So I'll be minimizing my lens purchases since the manufacturers are treating them as disposable items and provide little in the way of support. I certainly won't touch another Sigma lens unless the firmware is user serviceable and I can get their dock cheaply. Not happy.

Note: All numbers in Australian dollars.
