Hi folks,

Just testing out that K-50 that I bought the other day.

Avocet in flight with the Pentax K-50 + Sigma 18-250mm HSM Macro.

Not bad for a super-zoom
Mike,

Shooting these made me realize how much I love the cropping abilities of the K-3. With these 16mb cameras you have to make sure you are close enough else you won't get an image that can be printed that will look good. Like those images in the OP......they look OK on the screen but I would not print either of them, even at 10x8 inches.

A couple more images using the K-50 + Sigma 18-250mm HSM Macro.

Image #1 - Stilt Over Mountain

Image #2 - Cropped from Image #1

Image #3 - Avocets flying over the desert pond.

Image #4 - Cropped from Image #3

Image #4 - Cropped from Image #3

I printed Image #1 and Image #3 (above), along with the first image from the OP (see below), at 18x12 inches on A3+ paper and to me they look pretty danged good.

Ron, the mountains in the background really increase the drama of this image. But since they're much more muted, they don't detract from the focus. Very well done.

Thanks Mark.

There are two more Stilt Over Mountain images at http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/55987657

Well done Ron! Avocets are one of my favorite birds. They are not easy to capture in flight.

I totally agree with Mark. I like BIF but I find them much more interesting to include some context or habitat in the frame.

Nice set Ron; I'm a little jealous of your avocet ops but I won't hold that against you. And I do agree with you that when everything comes together, the cropability of the K3 is a gift. However, what I really want is for the birds to move closer...

Thanks for posting. I will check out the other Stilt thread too.

I really like #1, Ron. Very, very well done!

Thanks Larry. I am quite impressed with this Sigma 18-250mm HSM Macro lens. If the subject is close enough then the lens does really well IMO.

FWIW: The first image in the OP has been manipulated in post. The two birds were too far away from each other to make a good looking crop. So, I just cloned the front bird closer to the back bird then made my crop.

Cheers.

All these exotic birds in far away places make me full of envy, great pictures.

I will try my garden, if I can`t find at least a sparrow, well I can take a few shots of flowers.

Yes it is.

Make sure you do not get the OS version.
