Here are a few recent shots with my M3. I am enjoying this camera and testing the boundaries of what it can do. Lens choice also plays a part. I believe the image quality is better than the Eos M and noise performance is about 2/3 stop better than the Eos M. (I own both cameras). Single shot AF is faster than the M. I am still testing the servo AF and have recently received the EVF. Seems very high quality and much easier to use in bright sun. This camera is fun to use. All shots in this set are taken with Eos M3 +EF 100-400mm L IS II + 1.4X III extender except the first shot.

Cheers

Nice photos! If you can find one, you should try the Canon EF Life Size Converter with your 100-400 for you close-up photos. It is sort of like a teleconverter and a short extension tube packed into a single unit. Although Canon lists it as only compatible with an older 50mm macro lens, I have had great results using it on my original 100-400.

Great photos!

I'm as well enjoy my M3 very much with all my lenses.

Hi Murray

Could you describe how big is the image in EVF in compare to some Canon DSLR or other popular mirrorless camera (e.g. Sony A6000)? This will help be decide whether I should buy it or not - sadly Canon EVFs are very rare and difficult to find in camera stories where I live.

Thanks!

Karol

Good morning from North Queensland kbryd,

The EVF is very high quality ( 2.3 million dots) and bright. The screen is larger than any APS-C screen I have seen and about the same size as a Canon full frame screen. I find it particularly useful when using manual focusing and the magnify feature to achieve critical focus. I like the articulating feature of this EVF which is useful for low angle macro pictures. I have not tested servo AF yet.

Cheers

Thanks nnowak,

I find the new 100-400mm L IS II is a very sharp lens at the long end and the closeup range. It works very well with the 1.4X III extender as well. I will look for that life size converter online. I think it is designed for the old EF 50mm F2.5 macro lens. I seem to be gravitating towards macro and long lens photos of insects, birds, and wildlife. Here is one with my Eos M before my M3 arrived.

Agrariope species . I like the working distance ( about 1 Meter) with the 100-400mm L II. The colours in the background are very pleasing with the Canon long lenses.

Great photos , regardless to all the bad reviews on this camera .There w ere also bad reviews on the M1 and so far am loving it .

Eventually would get the M3 .

Thanks Markintosh,

I have yet to try the servo AF to see if it is good enough for moving birds and animals.

Good morning adventure69,

I find the M is a great camera-especially if you find its strengths and use them to best advantage. The body is a brick(well made) and the sensor is capable of very good results up to ISO 800. The AF could be faster but is useable with practice. The touch screen is quite fast to use once you become familiar with it. The EF-M lenses are very high quality. I have not tried the 11-22mm yet which I am looking forward to. The Eos M3 addresses most of the issues in the M-much faster all around, better sensor, more cropping ability when needed, better noise performance ( about 2/3 stop from my perspective),and some new features such as wifi and focus peaking.

I don't bother splitting hairs between brands. I am interested in image quality, reliability, useability and available lenses. I like Canon colours and Canon glass. Nikon, Leica,Sony, Zeiss,Pentax,Fuji, Olympus make some excellent glass as well.

I hope Canon makes a full frame mirrorless in the near future. I am interested in the new Sony full frame mirrorless cameras but not enough to change my Canon lenses. Camera bodies continue to evolve but lenses are a longer term investment. I would to see more EF-M lenses become available- macro, fast primes, long L series. The native lenses seem to focus somewhat faster than EF lenses with adapter.

Cheers

Murray

Hello again

Nice shot of your friend. You could do a series.:-)

With your closeups are you using the telephoto end of your 18-55mm or using the 22mm?The 18-55mm is better for closeups. Nice colours (Canadian spelling) in your flowers.I found that I could screw a closeup diopter such as the Canon 250D onto my 18-55mm and I have a very good closeup lens. ( this setup is better when using manual focus)

Eos M + 18-55mm + 250 D closeup diopter. The forest is reflected in the water drop.

Yeah, I think you are right about the 50mm f2.5 macro. Here are some very quick and dirty samples to give you an idea of the magnification differences. All are shot at MFD at 400mm. Don't use these to judge image quality as they are all hand held at iso 6400.

400mm + EF Life Size Converter
400mm + EF Life Size Converter

The original MFD for the 100-400L is about 1.8m. With the EF Life Size Converter, MFD drops a little to 1.6m. Because of the small extension tube built into the converter, you will lose infinity focus. The farthest away I can focus is now about 25m.

Here are a couple more with the 50mm f1.4 at MFD

If you have a static object, the Life Size Converter also works really well on the TS-E lenses.

Thanks for the positive feedback Sam,

I enjoy using the Eos M and now the M3. They are solidly made and produce high image quality. They have some issues, but with a bit of patience, there are workarounds. I find that I am getting out more often to use the gear. I love getting into the natural setting and recording what I see. It has been raining here for the past 3 weeks, so I haven"t gone outside much. Here are a few shots with my Eos M setup and a 32 year old FD L series lens.
