G3 X : a bad joke from Canon?

So more than 4 months ago Canon showed us the G3 X. It looked like a finished product, ready to go. Today, there's still nothing, nada.

So what's going on? Did they scrap it completely? Are they busy redesigning it in favor of a built-in EVF, like so many asked for in the comments? It would be respectful if Canon would communicate about it, and at least share a status update. In for a penny, in for a pound.

Or was it just a bad joke?

Not many summer releases. More come out in the fall just in time to get the shelves stocked and some reviews posted before Christmas.

If you recall the camera, they did not allow anyone to handle it. That tells me it was a one-off model; probably non-functional, that was put out to gather comment, as they said. I don't think it's a bad joke as Canon doesn't seem to have much of a sense of humor. Like everyone else, they are scrambling around, trying to figure out what will sell in enough quantity to justify the cost of development.

It's just a guess; but I think the responses they got sent them back to the drawing board. Their silence? Well, for one thing, they don't want to tip their hand to the competition. However, at the rate they are going, the competition will bring out the Mk II versions before Canon hits the streets with their first.

Me? I got tired waiting and bought an FZ1000. Love it!

I think you're right on all counts, Jerry.

A question about the FZ1000, if I may.. whats the slowest shutter you can achieve hand-held? at wide and at full tele?

Reason I ask is, for museums and art galleries (stationary subjects), although apsc may be better if you pixel peep, if the FZ1000 can achieve the same shot with say 1/8 second instead of 1/30, then 2 stops difference in ISO more than makes up for the difference in sensor size.

Have a shooting great day,

Yeah but suppose they decided to put in, say, an EVF(would be a good thing IMO), then they are probably debating right now on what to leave out. Canonitis perpetualis.

Would love to see a weather sealed(iso. just resistant) Rx10 II with a slightly longer lens (300mm) and hopefully 4K.

yes, I am quite annoyed with this kind of policy. If you are planning to release a camera in fall, don"t show it in winter, or indicate at least your intentions. :-x

I have finally decided to replace my G1x (tooooooo slow and not enough reach) and had my hart set on an Oly m43 (most likely PEN E-PL7) with the kit lens (14-42 power zoom) and the additional Oly 75-300 (150mm-600mm equivalent), as well as the Oly underwater housing.

Then Canon surprisingly announced a camera that might even fit my requirements (had given up on Canon a while ago). My main problem is that we still don"t know the details of the lens and - very important to me - if there will be an underwater housing. So far all G-Series models are being shipped with one. However, this being rather a Bridge Camera, I am not sure if Canon will follow it's tradition...

Since Olympus has a sale on here, selling the E-PL7 for an equivalent of US$540 incl. kit lens, and this sale ending June 30th, I might just go ahead and forget about Canon - once and for all... :-x

no lens upgrades whatsoever. Now Canon has a clear open road to stay ahead . Canon lenses rock !

Mario,

I haven't specifically set up a test for that; but I have several shots taken at ISO 1600 at 1/20 second at 200 mm that have sharp details. Usually, I don't use 400 mm equivalent indoors. The camera was new in early April and went on a guided bus tour in California that included Yosemite and Lake Tahoe. The FZ1000 was mostly used outdoors, and indoors, I mostly used my S95.

Well, now that once again Sony leads the way by announcing the new RX10 II today (4K!), maybe Canon will finally wake up and come up with something cool too.

Not really. Same old lens. Is Canon the only one who knows how to make new lenses ??

Stiil, that new Rx10 II is one impressive camera. BTW, where's that "new lens" for the G3 X?

Are you implying that the relatively new lens in your G7X, for example, is superior to that of the RX10? Or even matching it, for that matter? I haven't seen anything indicating that Canon would in any way be ahead in lens design for its compacts.

What a nuisance, Canon announces and Sony delivers... :-x

Would not be surprised if Sony starts shipping a 600mm RX1000 with new sensor design before Canon gets going... Well, now that DSLR sales are collapsing and Sony celebrates success with its mirrorless line even in the US (most difficult market for mirrorless), Canon might just disappear from the Camera market... ...at at their current performance - who cares... :-x

So, the G3x will have an old Sony sensor, while Sony gets ahead again... Canon day-dreams and relies on its brand name to do the selling, great, what a fantastic strategy...

Asking about "new lens" for G3X? Where is G3X in first place?

Well, that kinda was the whole point of this thread... But now that we've seen the RX 10 II, I guess it's safe to say that, once again, Canon went back to the drawing board. Let's hope they come up with a stunner.

I hope they went back to the drawing board and will return with something more nearly pocketable, a shorter zoom (maybe 24-200mm/300mm with 1" sensor), faster lens and EVF.

I don't think it can be smaller than the RX10 and have a faster lens at the same time, unless the sensor size is reduced. Or perhaps if they play some trick like an f/1.8 starting aperture at 24mm (eq.) but already shrinking to f/2.8 by 28 mm, and then proceed onwards to something like f/5.6 at 240mm.

Just hope you don't end up with something like the SX60 that I bought then dumped.

In a perfect world Sony would have made the new 1" sensor available to Canon, which would explain the delay, since they would have to adapt their slow imaging processor to the faster sensor. However, in the imperfect world that we are living in, Canon is just to slow to get going (as their own CEO admitted in the last DPR interview), and they will just deliver an outdated system for a too high price. Since nobody with an IQ above 10 will buy the camera, they will then claim that there is no market for such a camera, while Panny and Sony are laughing their head of... :(
