How to make a photo look old

Greetings,
How does one go about making a photo look old ? Specifically
a) I want to add some wrinkles, dust and scratches
b) Maybe a wee-bit of folded edges or torn effect

Is there any tut or action ? Id like to give it an old look without messing up the details too much

(The PS dust&scratch filter is rather disappointing).

Thanks
Arjun

As is customary to also 'show' what I am trying to do:

The original: http://www.pbase.com/image/19048611/large
The antique (so far) : http://www.pbase.com/image/19082210/large

Now, some nice way to add some wrinkler/or cracks?

Very nicely done, Arjun! For more decay or paper damage effects you can use special brushes and just paint with black, white, or whatever. There are a couple of Decay and Paper Damage brush downloads at the adobe share site that will do what you want. Download and save in the Photoshop brushes folder and give it a try. (Restart PS after installing the brushes.) Check out the other brushes while you are there. It could blow your mind.
p.s. the Dust and Scratches REMOVES dust and scratches. :-)

i've never done anything like this, but i did notice that many old photos are faded much more near the edges than centrally.

maybe: select most of the picture with a rounded rectangular type selection done wavily and irregularly with the lasso. then feather heavily (or heavy G blur while in quickmask mode) and invert the selection, then i guess you could experiment with lighteng and/or desaturating this peripheral selection.

just took a closer look at your "old" version,
i really like the stains on the frame and the noise you added.

depending on how old you want it to look you could also decrease contrast
some more (looks like you might have done it already somewhat)

i would do it by using curves and raising up the leftmost point and lowering the rightmost point to lose the darkest and lightest areas of the pic while decreasing the slope(contrast) of the line

You could add wrinkles by shooting a wrinkled piece of paper with strong cross light to produce good shadows, and then use that file as a displacement map:

Open the wrinkle file, convert it to grayscale, blur it a bit with gaussian blur. Save it as a .PSD Postscript format file.

Open your photo and select Filter> Distort> Displace. Leave vertical and horizonal scale at 10% and other defaults as is. Click OK, then open your .PSD displacement map.

Your photo will appear to be raised up in areas which are dark on the displacement map file, and depressed in areas that are light on the displacement map file.

Arjun,
To expand on Bill M's suggestion go to

http://share.studio.adobe.com/Default.asp

and download the Paper Damage brush set. It is very simple to create images such as this.

Thanks Bill,

I did a quick try of the cracked brushes - made it look more of a water starved field :-)

And yes, terribly silly of me to expect the filter to actually add dust & scratches :-)

Ahhh!...more magic from Chuck. Great stuff
Thanks

I wrote postscript when I meant PHOTOSHOP for the displacement map save format.

I learned this in a Photoshop class last week. In class we used it to put stripes on a white shirt by making an displacement map of the photo, then using it to bend horizontal stripes to the folds of the fabric. Way cool!

Hmm,

I could have sworn I replied to your original suggestion last night. For some reason, it did not show up.

Anyway, thanks Chuck - this sounds like a wonderful idea, especially the fact that the wrinkles would really represent a naturally creased paper.

I am in Detriot right now, so Im hoping to get back home soon to try this out.

A quick question on the crosslights you mentioned -> I dont have any fancy equipment - what would you suggest is the ideal lighting condition to take the photo of the paper (with light sources being a lamp, a torch and the sun at most :-)

Hello CJ,

I started with the Jaseck sketch action and then basically did a lot of dodging, smudging, contrast lightening. At the end I added a touch of anisotropic filter.

Though it looks somewhat like a pencil sketch, its not quite there (I liked the effect anyway so kept it). If you want to do pencil sketches, I suggest you do a search on this forum for a sketch tutorial .

I saw one of your photographs that looked like it was drawn with
pencil in your pbase site. I belive it was called "ishi and
deepti.jpg". Can you tell me how you did it if you don't mind.
Thanks.

Any available lightsource that you could move at low angle to the paper to produce shadows on the wrinkles would work. You can bump up the contrast in curves or levels.

You could also experiment with Render> Difference Clouds, altering the contrast, to produce a random imagemap for a wrinkle effect.

Chuck,

I did a quick try on this method with the 'clouds' pattern, just to see how it looks.

The final displacement effect looks more like a 'horizontal displacement' ie dark areas are 'warped' left and right (almost looks like I ran liquify on them)
instead of looking like ups and downs.

David, thanks.

I downloaded the paper damage brush - I am still playing around with the opacity and effects - looks very very good !
