Hi Brett,

Was your first photo taken inside the Memorial Fountain to Lord Frederick Charles Cavendish, former Lord Lieutenant of Ireland who was murdered in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, on 8 May 1882, his first day in office. The fountain is at Bolton Abbey/Priory on the Bolton Estate, Skipton, North Yorkshire BD23 6EX, UK. ??

Since your recent comment, I can't resist adding the postcodes ;-)

...simply because I have prepped five or six photographs and Google got each one of them at the first time of asking. It's getting late, so I'm going to pass on this one!

For the ignorant among us, such as me, how do you search Google for an image? Copy and paste the image -- where? How? You've got me curious.

My thoughts precisely, Hans. Looks like we could be at Les Berges de Seine, on the right bank of the river in Paris.

I think you have it right Pat.

An old Photo of the same area.

Over to you, again!

This should be easy but here’s a caution: In this city I saw a number of church steeples that are, at first sight, of similar design.

When it rains in Ireland, we call it a ‘soft day’, in Scotland they say it’s ‘dreich’; in this city it’s called ‘Schmuddelwedder’.

Hmm, does looks as though we must be in Cologne (or the area where Kolsch is spoken). As I don't speak German (to the constant confusion of Italian shopkeepers), I'm not sure we can go further. But will have a look at a few steeples ....

No Mike, we’re not in Cologne (or Köln, whichever you prefer).

We are in area where the Niederdeutsch (or Low German) dialect is spoken. My source for this comment is König, Werner (1994) Atlas zur deutschen Sprachem, Munich: Deutscher Taschenbuch Verlag.

I was led to believe that the term Schmuddelwedder is unique to the city/region in question. I hope I was not misled and haven’t consequently misled you and others with my clue.

One way or another, I’ll put up another clue later tonight.

The city is the home of a famous beer company, but the name of the church may associate that type of wine...

Nearby is a statue of four animals, standing on each others’ backs. Folklore suggests touching the hooves of largest of them will make wishes come true. (It did not work for me, the Schmuddelwedder continued!)

I think you must be talking about the Church of Our Lady, in Bremen, Pat.

Free turn if I am right, as I am travelling for the next few days
