I was going through the Nikon or Canon dilemna and called our local camera shop here in Vancouver. I couldn't find Nikon on their website. This was five years ago. They sell and service amateurs and professional market. The answer I got was they wouldn't stock Nikon as they weren't providing the after sale service. Guess which brand I went with.

Cheers

I just checked Canon for service centers, and they only have one as well in eastern Canada, so Nikon is just catching up now.

Keeping it simple
Until the downturn in the Canadian dollar, it's probably a fair assumption that more Nikon cameras were shipped or purchased from the United States than sold through Canadian retail and online outlets.

It's very expensive and inefficient for any company to maintain a separate distribution and service network for the Canadian market.

Sony did the same thing this year. They are saying that Precision Canada in the U.S. of A. handles all service and warranty calls, now. But when I called their registered number, it did not ring through.

Really, given the size of our country, many of us would have to ship the camera for service anyway. I don't care one bit where the service centre is located. We have a decent postal system and good couriers. It makes sense for Nikon to have all the technicians, specialized tools, equipment and training facilities in one place.

When I bought my Asus laptop eight years ago, people were warning that there was only one Asus service centre in Canada. So what?

Kind of reminds me of oil companies. For over a decade of high prices, they made hundreds of billions in profit. Then, oil prices drop (akin to a camera sales drop) and they immediately begin closing down rigs, processing centres, exploration. Where did the money all go? Was nothing retained?

It all went into the CEO's bank accounts.
