I brought in this photo on CD taken with my S400 of my neice to Walmart to be printed as an 8x10 on their new Fuji machine...

When I went to pick it up an hour later the sales girl said " we can't sell this print to you, this is a professional photo"...

I should have been flattered but was rather peeved at the insinuation and inconvienience...I talked to the manager and she said I would have to show her the photo on the CD to prove I didn't scan it on there machine...I showed her the CD and explained that I should't be penalized for making a decent photograph...the photo was taken outdoors using fill flash and I removed a cluttered background and replaced it with clouds in Photoshop...

She finally agreed to letting me have the print and said next time just show the girl the CD so they know it's not being scanned...(the machine reads media as well as allowing you to scan film prints)...Very nice quality print at 8x10 by the way...

When I went to pay for the print the girl who originally said the photo was too professional looking asked me what kind of digital camera I used...when I took my little S400 out of my pocket and said I used this little Canon Elph her face lit up and she said "hey, that's the S400...I just bought that camera and am so happy to know it can take real nice photos like that"...

Not bad for a little point and shoot, hey?

Here's the photo...isn't she a doll?

Great picture! Why can't I get shots like that with my S400? Is that a backdrop that you are using?

Too bad you can't frame that comment!
If somebody said something, get their name, and print it up with the data and place they said it.

I have two such sayings on my wall at work, I call them "The Immortal Quotes"

It's not me, the compiler can't understand how to compile my code. - Jeff Kenoza.

We are going to violate the h*ll out of any program timing! - Bill Klingler.
I love it! Too professional....GUFFAW! Those of us who have the
S400 can understand why she would say that...but I imagine if
someone would "card me" when I ordered a beer I would feel that way
too!
When I go in, they understand very quickly that I am the professional who took the pictures. Usually because I submit the job under my business name....

How did you crop the subject from the original background so cleanly?

Roger,
Thanks...I made the background in Photoshop using the clouds effect
under filters> render... the original background was rather
distracting...

This shot was taken outdoors and I used fill flash to remove
shadows...

ijaaad,
I used the magnetic lasso tool the trace around my neice...

I than copy and pasted her onto a new frame with the clouds...

I cleaned up a couple rough areas using the clone tool...

Thanks for looking...

What a great shot! I've been giving serious thought to buying an S400. Canon may owe you a commission.

Great shot, but sheesh... What a bunch of idiots those WalMart
people must be.

I suppose they think that individuals who want to copy professional
photos don't have scanners and CD burners?
Really Ron,
I guess that thought never crossed there mind...

Just cause it's on CD it's gotta be legit?

Go figure...

Thanks Isabel...

Yea, I guess I should be flattered but what an inconvienience...fortunatly I still had the CD in the car...what does that prove anyway? it could still be scanned at home and burned onto a CD...

BTW...what does GUFFAW mean? Is it an acronym like LOL or is it an saying I'm not familiar with?

Bob,

Please tell me you are using a tablet or something to help with such a clean outline of the subject. I use a mouse and my lasso skills need much to be desired.

Great photo and processing work!

I can see why they'd think so, and worry about copyright probs, I guess.

Great work, both photo and post-processing, Mofongo !

Vito,

Thanks for the kind words...I did use a mouse and must admit it is like drawing with a bar of soap...just a lot of practice and patience I guess through the years...using the magnetic lasso helps a lot though cause it actualy "clings" to the outline as you trace...some day I'd like to get a graphics tablet...
