Just noticed on your second to the last shot that bees actually have what looks like two little fingernails at the end of their appendages. That is a truly amazing shot.

It takes a bit of work to get it right but the idea is simple: get the light source close, big enough for Strobist: Lighting 102: Unit 2.1 - Apparent Light Size , and properly diffuse without blocking too much.

Thanks Andrea. I'd say everything has something by which they grip or hold on - the precursors to hands. They are our long lost cousins after all ...

Thanks MRP ... No, it's a resin bee. Those mandibles look like they could easily be cutters but they are used to gather resin and other materials for constructing the nest.
