Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens Review by Nasim Mansurov of Photography Life

Is it really hand-holdable?
That depends on the person.

I carry it around all day, no issue. Bring it up to my eye for the occassional burst of photos, no issue. Hold it to my eye for a minute or so, no issue. Hold it there for any length of time, that does start to become an issue.
Hey.

I just bought this lens. It's quiet good!

Fisrt day out, with terrible light. A Sanderling was kind enough to let me test the lens. :-)

I havent tried with the converters so far. I stayed two hours on the shore, only handheld shots, but it was alright the lens is not too heavy.

not so easy @ f2.8...

Sounds like it’s not that much easier than toting the older VR version around.
Except that I have tried the old version and to me it is much easier than toting the old version round. However, the big difference is the balance of the new lens compared to the old, the weight being more evenly distributed rather than being front heavy, and THAT is why the old version was difficult to use, IMO. Not only that, but the two piece lens hood is a pain to use and a pain to pack in a backpack/bag.

Can I walk around with it handheld for a while and raise it to my eye for the occasional photo, yes. Carry it on an all day assignment, no.
The 400mm lens weighs about the same as my 500mm lens and I use a tripod and gimbal head for steady support. I don't think just anybody can easily handhold a 8.4 lb. lens. Some people can, others can't hold an 8.4 lb. lens steady. I have tried with my Nikon 500 to handhold. I am 5'11" tall and 177 lbs. and I am in decent physical shape after years in construction contracting and steady handholding is not for me.

..definietly on my Wanted List! =)

Can someone tell me how to remove the lens collar? apparently to put on the lens skins I need to remove the collar, for the life of me, I don't see how??

brain fart moment? please help ?

You don't need to remove the tripod collar. I fitted my lens coat easily, just needed to be stretched a bit, not much at all actually. Feed it over the tripod foot then over the lens. Cheers

You remove the lens foot, not the collar. The 4 screws that hold the foot on need to be taken out and the foot comes off, same procedure when you add an AS replacement foot.

Note that the Wimberley foot, as 6 months ago, would not let you reverse the lens hood. They may have altered the foot by now. RRS, does not have that issue.
