I thought I had read some rumors about this some time ago but it's been silent. I am in the market for a flash for my X-T1 and x100s and trying to determine if I just get the nissin i40 or wait a bit longer.

For a cheaper option, and one that I believe to be as good as the Nissin i40, you could check out Meike MK320 TTL for fuji.

Where would you buy a Meike Mk320 beside ebay?

The Nissin i40 is really a great flash, there was a rumor of another flash coming out for Fuji cameras but I do not know if it was that new small Metz Flash that came out that they were speaking of. I have two Nissin i40 flash and they do a really great job, they do not blow out my images or under expose them. The only thing that I have a problem with the Nissin i40 is that they both take up a lot of room in my bag as well as add some added weight to my bag as well. Even with these two problems that I have with the i40 flash, I still like using them and will keep using them even if Fuji comes out with something new later on.
Some owners of the Nissin i40 flash have reported that the lettering does not wear well. Rubs off easily.

How are yours holding up?

The Nissin i40 is a very capable flash, small and has dials, which fits with Fuji's X-series cameras. Fuji's EF-42 is a hundred dollars cheaper and is a better deal if you don't want all the accessories the i40 comes with, nor care much for low flash output lower than 1/64th power.

On Fuji Rumours it has been said that the firmware upgrade coming this month will make the X-T1 feel like a new camera. I have been thinking that part of that could well be the introduction of one or more new flashguns, and a major upgrade to the TTL flash system.

They are available from Amazon - here in the UK so pretty sure they would also be available in US too:

Also sold with name EACHSHOT

Hope that helps.

There are limitations with the nissin i40 and this is clearly Fuji's fault because they did not fix this in a firmware update. With other camera makers, these limitations do not exist.

There is a workaround for the HSS but it makes it more difficult to use

The mk320 is much cheaper than the i40. Anything the mk320 lack or doesn't work as well?

Other than GN nothing I can see but specs are available for both.

Prior to purchasing my Nissin i40s, I contacted the company and they stated that they were aware of the problem that the first few production models had with that lettering problem, but they stated that that situation has been corrected. I have had my two i40s for quite a while now and I have not had any problems with the lettering coming off so fa.

I have an X-T1 with a myriad of lenses, but unfortunately I have had to purchase a Canon set up for the flash problem. Fuji promised years ago that they would be forthcoming with more professional flash options, but this has never materialized. Now that Profoto has introduced the TTL options with the B1 and B2, I have gone to Canon for all of my professional work.

It is too bad, I wish FUJI could have stepped up to the plate and gotten serious, but alas this one problem makes them an amateur product in my opinion.

Shot yesterday, all settings TTL HSS using a Canon 5d iii with a Profoto B2.

This shot is just one example of how advanced Canon has gotten with it's flash control. Fuji doesn't even bother trying.

So just what are the limitations of the Nissin i40?

Can you be specific.
