EOSHD got hold of an image revealing the A7R-II from the EXIF data, and the resolution is 59megapixels!!!

I honestly hope that's not true. It's going to be awful in low light...

If they could just leave the MP the same, improve the sensor, auto focus, and add IBIS.
You can just normalize to a lower resolution if you don't need 59MP. According to DXOMark the A7R doesn't suffer at all from having all those pixels.

The A7R is also 36MP not 59MP. That's why I hope they keep it at 36MP and just improve the sensor. Guess we will see what happens.

It's good if Sony differentiates its cameras: A high-resolution A7Rii that best sits on a tripod, and a low-light monster A7s that is perfect for night time :)

Totally Agree... and 36MP is already a challenge sometimes to get sharp pictures...

Those EXIF are awfully easy to fake.... Wait and see!
I know, but this image was leaked same day as Zeiss officially uploads a 56MP (cropped?) image on Flickr.

This could also just be a prototype camera not intended for production yet, just to test lenses at very high MPs. Also, why didn't Sony just settle for 54Mp (same pixel density as the 24Mp APS-C sensor), I guess that would be sufficient for 8K timelapse videos. Maybe they are going for 9K for some reason?

I believe the formal model numbers look like ILCE-7M2 or ILCA-77M2 (the only two M2 models by Sony so far). So from what I have seen sony used "M2" and not "II" to represent their successor bodies.

Could they not create the high MPx using the new sensor shift technique?

We did discuss that in another thread, but when looking at the uploaded Zeiss 56Mp portrait it is unlikely to get such a sharp image of something not stationary. Additionally the photo was taken handheld which also makes sensorshift technique improbable.

Good point nandbytes, it should have read ILCE-7RM2 then, however, it is not impossible that Sony will name it ILCE-7R II in the EXIF for readability reasons, instead of ILCE-7RM2 or ILCE-7SM2. We'll have to see.

If they offered true 4 pixel binning (for a rounded 15MP image), it would make sense, since we could use it in high resolution or low resolution (high DR and ISO) mode.

The one nice thing about 59mp is that it makes APS glass a lot more useful. Nice to have the option to carry around FF glass when you want maximum in image quality/shallow DOF, or APS glass when you want a little extra portability...
