much smaller than I thought it was! I was walking around today and dropped into a camera store to play around with the V3 and compare it's VF with the V2's. Of course the J5 was on display so I picked it up to see how it felt. Well, I've never owned a J model before but I've picked one up before. This is the first time I've picked one up and thought that the thing felt solid. It seems to be put together really well. The next thing I was shocked about was just how small the thing is. I'm not sure if it's much different size wise to the J4, but it was so tiny! Anyway, I just wanted to share some initial thoughts but it seems I've begun to ramble so I'll cut it here.

Cool thing about the J5 is the the integrated grip so even though it's small it's easier to hold onto compared to the previous Js.

I have played with one today and I can say that its the first J series camera that I would consider buying at full price. I definitely see it as a great street camera for night due to its small footprint and improved sensor. I want an EVF so more than likely I will wait for a V4 should one be announced. The J5 is definitely a big step in the right direction.

Agreed! I've never really been interested in the J series but this one looks cool, feels good, and has a much improved layout in regards to controls. The bonus is the new sensor (if it performs as well as everyone is hoping).

Yup, I like an EVF or at least the option of adding an EVF so I'll hold off until the V4 is shown. I am really starting to like the V3 though, so if the V4 isn't a huge improvement I'll probably end up buying a discounted V3. I was comparing the EVF of my V2 with the V3's today and the new one is quite a bit better. Hopefully they can squeeze the V3's (or better) EVF into the V4's body, but if not I'd be okay with it as an add on.

It preforms much better. More of an improvement than I expected. Take your memory card with you next time and save a few RAW files. I'd say its more than half a stop difference in ISO and the color noise is vastly better.

As long as I can use the GPS or flash concurrently with an attachable EVF I will mostly be satisfied. :) As a side note, this is the first 1 camera since the V2/J3 that I've actually seen stocked in a camera store in western Japan.

Awesome thanks all for the early reports. This new sensor is very promising.....

Great news. My use-case is tiny and discreet, shoot between waist to eye-level on the street and primarily black and white high contrast. Thanks for your other post!

I would love to see more ;-) ;-)

A quick question: can you shoot Raw + JPEG in "Pop" and "High Contrast" creative modes?

Are you a photographer or a technician?

I'm gonna go see if the evf of the V3 fits on top when it's available here... one can hope. :)

Sorry for the confusion, my other post actually had photos taken with the V2+18.5mm. I talked a little about my handling of the J5 in a store prior to posting my pictures so maybe my writing style wasn't the best.

I usually don't go to the camera store that often but the good news is I was in the area again and went inside to try and get an answer for you. The bad news is that when you use the creative modes it only allows you to save as JPEG's. Pop looks pretty cool though, so to be honest if I was in the mood to use one of the creative modes I don't think I would mind shooting it in JPEG, but your opinion may differ.

No worries.

WOW, thanks a lot for the check! I'm disappointed about losing Raw, but I'm excited about getting mine.

Thanks again for going back and finding out for us!

Yeah.. turned out that they arrived yesterday and the salesperson looked at me like I was insane when I tried to pry off the flap- "That's the pop-up flash, you've to on the camera first."

What can I say, I've never held a J-series before!
Your expectation was NOT unreasonable.

Every "cheap" DSLR in history has had a flash mount / hotshoe.

So its really annoying that Nikon extorts another $400 through the "V" line for someone to have it, compared to the "J" line. I may not be in materials purchasing.... but I know for a damn fact that a hotshoe doesn't cost $400.

So if its just a cheap add on, Nikon should add it on!

Isn't it like well known that the J line has no EVF option, nor flash attachment option? Isn't this like one key talked about forever distinction between the two lines? :-)

You want the new sensor that much then I guess :-)

Actually I always thought it's in the ergonomics, EVF, deeper buffer, dials etc, and yes I thought you could attach the SB-N5 flash and the likes...

I'm reminding myself of all the reasons for when I got the EVF only a week after having the V3... it's taking a lot of effort not to run out and get it especially at that price! :-) You're lucky you use the J-line!
