For clearing it up ;-)

Still think that not even all nikonophiles are as bad grin...there must be a shred of common sense and humanity in them ! me keeps good faith
Majic,
If you had read my post, you would have seen that I said, and I
quote "Nikonophiles". Not Nikonians. This is not a mere semantic
game I am playing.

There is a huge, huge difference between a Nikonophile and a Nikonian.
The Nikonians are a great bunch of people with their own
website....Nikonophiles are another matter entirely...they
Nikonophile will not consider any lens that is not a Nikkor, nor
will he shoot with or entertain shooting with anything that does
not say "Nikon" or "Nikkor"on it. Anything.

You putting words into my mouth. I draw a clear line of
distrinction between a Nikonophile and the entire group of people
calling themselves Nikonians. If you have been around the Nikon
system for a while, you know the difference.I can understand your
confusion over the subtle difference between a Nikonophile and a
Nikonian...they are similar-sounding words used to describe groupos
of photo-people, but the Nikonophile belief system has at its core
the feeling that unless it is a Nikon product, that it is somehow
junk.

Nikonians are people who like to take photos, and are a great bunch
of people.THey ever have a website of their own, with links to many
pages put up by individual people like me and you. Nikonians are
kind of like "Fujians". Now perhaps you can understand what I was
trying to say? I hope so....I don't want to disparage the happily
enthusiastic users of Nikon cameras and Nikkor lenses, but if one
brings up the concept of the 28-200 or 28-300 all-in-one zoom
lenses made by 3rd party makers amongst a group of Nikonophiles, he
will be laughed down,or simply ignored most times. At least that
has been my experience. And,if the camera doesn't say Nikon on the
prism, it isn't bought by the true Nikonophile.

I myself see a lot of value in the Nikon system, and have for over
two decades, but I am also perfectly willing to say that there are
3rd party lenses that are the equal or better of Nikon-made ones,
and there are also some fine flash units made by makers other than
Nikon that are far better than what Nikon has on the market. I am a
Nikonian. Not a Nikonophile. Huge, huge difference. And now, I'll
let it drop, okay? I wish you all the best majic.

I dont see nothing offensive in his posting ....and the lens and camera in his posting are just part of his signature - like I have, and many many other fuji guys too.

Relax derrel, you're stigmatising!
They only come> together when you are at an early stage of determining the Canon vs> Nikon system decision.

If you have no interest in a forum, don't read it.
Ken Eis - D100 and S45 Nikon 18-35, 28-105, 24-120VR, 70-300,
80-400VR, 500mm and 60mm macro
Well, there we go....a Nikon D100 shooter moseying over here to
Fuji SLR Talk to post his equipment profile and to tell us "not to
read" a forum, and to also bring up the Canon versus Nikon issue.
The new forum has already been on-line for what? 30 minutes and we
have a Nikon SLR Talk regular here,as I said, posting his current
lens lineup and his NIKON body of choice...

Much as I appreciate your forums, I'd like to just say that forums aren't filing drawers. In case, that isn't clear... I don't want to have to cross reference, it's a waste of a priceless commodity - TIME.

When I ask for a lens opinion I am looking to people who have the same camera as I do and preferably one who's using or have used the lens I am enquiring about b4. Huh, Nikon SLR Lens Talk? That's like a Chicken without a Head! Pkkkk Pkkkk Pkkkk.

Thanks but no thanks I get all I need here and I really don't need to wade through a Specific Lens with Generic Camera Forum for lens info. This is really like doing things upside down. Which came first, the camera or the lens ???

LIFE ON THE FLY

Joe,
you forgot to mention XR Di for Windows :)

Andrei.
We used to have our own little island. Notice how many tourists
types have join us recently? Hell, I don't know anybody here
anymore. The images are getting worse, more snap shooters, more of
the same old questions we answered for 6 months now. I liked it
better before.

Derrel makes a good point, Sigma will get kicked like a stray dog
in the trash over there. Maybe that forum should be named Nikon
mount lenses? It does not really matter to me, I'm leaving here
soon anyway. These toursists are giving me a headache!

Maybe next time I see what's a best 1st lens in the Fuji forum, I
will post. "The 4mm-700mm Takahara 4x5. ES ASP LSD v2.31". The
dynamics here have changed.

Because of increased activity in all the SLR forums I have created
a 'Canon SLR Lens Talk' and 'Nikon SLR Lens Talk' forum.

Please use the Nikon SLR Lens Talk forum for all discussion related
to lenses and lens issues:

I feel the same way about this forum. Can't say that I care for Phil's changes which I think will sink the Fuji SLR Talk by slowing depleting it of it's many wonderful and wise people.

I can't believe that we can no longer post Nikon lens questions in the Fuji forum!!! We will no longer get accurate opinions on how nikon lenses will perform on Fuji Equipment. The Nikonians will shut us out. I am saying this as a Nikon user for many years. We have the best Forum on your site IMHO
Why are you messing it up??

Perhaps there should also be:

.A seperate Fuji forum for mac and PC users
.A seperate Fuji forum for black and white ETC ETC ETC

The beginning of the end for Fuji Forum.

I really don't think the sky is falling guys.

Phil just said "please use the new forum for talking about nikon lenses"

He didn't say "you must use the new forum for all talk about lenses" or "you will be banned if you talk about lenses here." I am pretty convinced that he's a lot smarter than that.

My current opinion, and we'll see how it goes, is that things here will probably be able to stay more or less as they always have, and that the new forum will probably flourish alongside us too. It gives us a new option, not necessarily a new hassle.

So anyway, I'd say let's give Phil the benefit of the doubt for a while at least - he doesn't sound like a particularly draconian kinda guy.

You know, you're absolutely right as is Phil. Camera and lens issues really are two distinct areas. If you come to these forums to gather specific information; there is NOTHING WRONG in separating issues for discussion. It will in fact simplify the process and speed up your search. If you come here to be chatty then maybe you need to reprioritize things a bit.. ..

I'd rather know about how various Nikon-mount lenses work with my S2. We get far too much pontificating as it is about the minutiae of people's experience that are rarely repeatable because of too many unaccounted for variables. I'd rather not have someone with a D1x or a D100 telling me about what lenses to use since there is enough variation in the cameras that their experience may or may not be instructive, let alone the cross-branding questions (Nikkor 18-35 v. Sigma 15-30; Nikkor 28-70 v Tamron 24-75, etc).

So I won't be visiting the other forum very much, if at all.

It has to be about the Art, but it is also about Science

Joe,

I extracted an interesting thing out of Phil's message to the Canon crowd, wherw Phil wrote:

"I work long hours to keep this site going, as I have mentioned in the past the forums contribute almost nothing to the upkeep of the site, because advertisers prefer the other areas of the site (news, reviews). Yet the forums are easily the single largest expense (bandwidth, server load). I believe strongly in the value of the community and have pioneered this community since 1999, I work hard to keep it alive and keep it sane .
Come on people, rally around, calm down, see sense and help me to help you. "

From his comment I draw this analogy: advertisers also love the sports pages of newspapers. Nobody wants his ad to run near the obituaries, nor near "troubling" news stories about wars and unpleasantness. So, why not simply throw away all the news from every newspaper, and simply publish a Sports Section, where the advertisers can all get what they want? Great idea, right?

I think the Forums section is what draws attention and people to Phil's site. The advertisers are obviously very important to Phil. We leeches sucking up bandwidth and server CPU cycles really are a drain on the budget. I get it,I get it. Without the Forums, there would be more room for the advertisers and their messages. There's very, very little "buzz" surrounding dPreviews without the Forums.Phil could easily get rid of these forums and could save a lot of money.

The explosive growth of digital photography, and the avid amatueurs, hobbyists, and professional photographers who gather in a community to exchange ideas and comments about photography with particular cameras is,obviously, not what the advertisers care about. Canon SLR Talk has over five times the volume we have here in Fuji SLR Talk. It's an entirely different crowd here. Nikon SLR Talk has two times what we have volume wise, and membership wise they must have ten times as many readers and lurkers.

An excellent comment to Phil's post, the one Joe linked us to, is this post by a Canon user: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=5570674

I dunno'...maybe a massive re-ordering of Phl's site is in order...maybe the excessive drain on the budget would be alleviated by forcing people to stay_strictly_ on the topics of Canon SLR's, Canon lenses, Nikon lenses, and to keep printer questions in the printing forum, EX Software questions on the PC or Mac tools forums, etc. I don' know--Phil has given us (Fujistas) very little guidance in this matter--a thread he started in Canon SLR Talk, and then his directive yesterday that "all discussion of lenses and lens issues" is to be handled in the newly-created Nikon SLR Lens Talk forum was the first I heard about the new direction. Seriously, I am not 100 percent sure what Phil wants, since he is so hands-off most of the time, and he spends very loittle time communicating with this forum. Phil's position on the forums is truly unclear to me as a Fuji SLR Talk regular...I don't sift through CSLRT or NSLRT on a regular basis to find out what the plan is for the forums. But it seems clear that we're a financial drain,or as Phil said ,"forums contribute almost nothing to the upkeep of the site, because advertisers prefer the other areas of the site (news, reviews)"

I really think you're overreacting here.

The way I read it is "hey guys, this is hard work and I am trying my best to keep everything going smoothly" NOT "you leeches are ruining my life, do it my way"

He is most specifically trying to get the two biggest and noisiest forums under control and into a greater degree of civility. He may or may not succeed, but I don't think there's any malice in his attempt.

Some people are going to love the new forum, other people are going to be uninterested. Both people are people that Phil wants reading his site and his reviews, he is trying to make it easier for all of us to access the information here - that's a good thing.

Chill, see what happens. Everything is fine :)

If Phil starts hitting people with his banning stick just because they post off-topic stuff, that's a different story, but I really really don't think he will.

The fact is, the reviews draw the advertising dollars and the forums eat up a lot of resources. No need to draw wounded conclusions.

The Canon forum is obviously out of control. It's a bit like a party with too many people, but rather than pulling the plug and telling everyone to go home, Phil has simply opened another room. I sincerely doubt he's going to storm into the Fuji salon and insist that all 6 of us must go to the Nikon lens room whenever we want to discuss lenses. But if the Fuji forum ever does get overcrowded, the overflow room is ready.

I am willing to bet that if Phil hadn't announced the new lens forums in the Fuji forum, someone would have taken him to task for failing to notify us poor Fujistanis.

Hey Phil,

So, if my question is: how Nikkor VR system works with the S2?, where do I post. Maybe I just cannot post, because wherever I go, I'm gonna be off topic, banned and punished. Maybe I should post it in Canon forum, so it gets lost really fast and nobody realizes :-).

I think this is 99.9% nonsense. Anyway, I think it's gonna be fun to read the cr@p questions about a third party lenses could generate in the new "Nikon" and "Canon" lenses forum.

I think we here do not need any other forum. The volume is not enough for it and anyone interested is able to keep up to speed with the forum (which cannot be said about the 3 minutes old and away message forum).

And last for this one, advertisers want their ads in whichever page, but they want them in this site because of the number of hits. And forums are a part of what makes number of hits hight in this site, and I think a big part.

Best,
Dioni
